Spinnerbaits

When I was young fishing with my Dad, Grandpa, or Uncles meant going along the shore and pounding the bank with spinnerbaits and see what would happen. In the last couple of years since I joined a club and have become a more seasoned angler I have forgotten all about my roots (spinnerbaits), which leads me to my question. I know there are a lot of variables in spinnerbaits, but I was looking for input on how they are effectively used in 50-55 degree water. Here is my brief thought. Most of the lakes/rivers I fish are relatively clear, so I would try a smaller profile bait with a pair of willow leaf blades in the spring since the baitfish are smaller this time of year. That is just a thought. I would like to hear what some of you guys think about style of spinnerbait and where/how to use them this time of year.

Also, who makes the better spinnerbaits out there?

    Thanks

This time of the year, I love to throw spinnerbaits with a big thumping style blade on them. Traditionally the water is usually stained this time of the year and that thumping blade works wonders. The spinnerbait I throw the most in this time of the year it the T-1 Terminator with gold colored blades and a white/chartreuse colored skirt. That one catches the most fish for me this time of the year. I retreive it slowly so it stays in the strike zone longer.

As summer rolls in I switch to willow leaf blades and try to match the hatch with the blade size and color. Don’t be afriad to mix things up. I put holographic mylar on some of my blades to add a little flash. I am a firm believer that this works. It gives the blade a two-tone effect and offers flashes of color that most other spinnerbaits don’t have.

I love to throw spinnerbaits(as JC will testify). Sometimes it’s hard to keep the fish off them, and sometimes…..well……they just need to be left at home.

I stand behind 100% the T-1 Terminators. They are tough as nails and never need to be tuned.

    BomberA,
I too grew up fishing spinnerbaits and still throw them today. My favorite that I have always had success with anytime of the year, is a 1/4 oz. white single colorado blade.

I agree w/Glenn. Anyone who grew up fishing has tied on a spinnerbait at one time or another. It is probably the easiest and most versatile bait EVERMADE!! I prefer White/Chart. w/tailgrub attached. Willow Leaf Blades in spring, colorado’s in summer. Back to willow in fall.

I support Blue’s comments… Titanium Spinnerbaits are worth the extra $5 be lure, as they don’t need tuning, have a more “lively” effect (Titanium us stronger,so thinner arms are possible, thus giving off more vibrations.)

I prefer the Srike King Titantium’s, but they are pricier and harder to find. Only place I can find them is Bass Pro Shops. The Terminators are great, too.

Don’t forget to slip a Action Plactic 5″ Grub trailer on your 1/4 Oz White Spinner…

The spinnerbait has been my NUMBER 1 goto bait for the last couple of years. I like a double willow leaf all year long. If your throwing a spinnerbait all day long, the double willow leaf won’t wear you out as fast, it has less resistance coming through the water. I’ve tried to throw those big blades, but it just wore me out. I’ll always use a trailer as well, usually a twin tail of some sort, and during a tournament, I always use a trailer hook. I love the titanium wire spinnerbaits, however I usually break 2 or 3 a year. Has anybody else broke the titanium wires off? They usually break at the head of the jig. Char/White is my favorite, and sometimes I’ll put a few red strans in it as well. Good Luck.

I’ve yet to break a Titanium Spinnerbait. I always tip my spinnerbaits with a trailer whether it be a twister tail or a split tail trailer.

I also have yet to break a titanium.

I like a single colorado or Oklahoma blade like bass boy. I usually go the opposite of Slop, using colorado/oklahoma in spring, willow in summer, but this year with the clear water in spring, I have been using both.

I went for a while too where I almost stopped using them, but they have been my number one bait so far this year.

I also love the Terminator spinnerbaits. I have broken several however right next to the R bend. As for blade choice I prefer the oklahoma or turtle back blade for stained water and a double willow for clear water.

This year for me the key has been wood especially for largies, and pounding the bait into every piece of it has really been important. This weekend it seemed as though if the bait didn’t hit the cover I rarely got bit. Just some observations.

I’m a spinnerbait nut….I throw one about 85% of the time!!

I’d give out the link but the virtual store isn’t up and running due to some slow guy that hasn’t got it up and running but “Team Supreme” Spinnerbaits are just plain awesome…they have titaninum ones along with the standard ones and you wouldn’t be let down!!

    Hey, guys,

Ok, I remember back when I was young and knew everything (well, I still kina remember everything yet ), I thought that a chart/white 1/4oz spinner bait with a single chrome colorado balde was the bomb (say that sentece five times, hey)!

Today, that spinner bait still has a place amoung my lures.

    Thanks ,

I agree, when is that store gonna be operational?

Then again, it would probably be up & running if the designer wasn’t running north to fish all the time.

I hope that designer never needs to purchase anything off that wed site. Fishing does have a tendency to get in the way of the work. Weird how that works. Just Kidding…………..
