Pool 3

Why does Pool 3 above the dam and around the casino suck? Maybe it’s the fact that I’m not a great fisherman , but I have never heard of anything special from that area. I have not fished it a lot, but when I have, I have only found dinky smallmouth. Also, how come the backwaters aren’t as vast up there. Everytime a tournament launches out of Treasure Island everyone locks through and zooms down to Pepin. Is there a particular reason or am I just lousy at finding these fish? Any thoughts?

    Thanks

    BomberA,

I’ve asked the same question. There have been several major tournaments held out of the casino but the fish don’t seem to stay around. Here is what a Wisconsin biologist told me.Released fish wander looking for schools to associate with. If they don’t find anything they keep moving. It was his opinion that the fish travel up the pool and take a right into the St. Croix. I don’t know if that has been documented by tracking studies or not. My own observations is the population of bass below the dam at Red Wing is growing and may be due to some of the release fish heading down stream.
