I should have thought of this sooner but didn’t remember about it until I saw the results of it on sunday. In a previous post when we where talking about ideas that are small but can help out huge on tourney day? Well I ALWAYS change the hooks on my crank baits, stick baits, and traps. I take off those factory hooks and throw on gamakatsu’s (spelling?). This really is crazy how much it helps. On sunday I went out and braved the 30 mph wind and fished some sand flats where the wind was pushing waves up on em and was nailing smallmouths, but they were hitting short because half of the fish i cuaght were hooked in the head or side of the face. Those hooks are so sharp and can really help out huge. Just keep your hand away from them unless you want to use the pliers on yourself. Another good tip that I found some suprising sucess to is to remove the front hook on a crank, stick, or rattle trap and replace it with an equal sized RED hook. It aparently was found in a study that bass will hit that hook more than the [Ooops, did I just say that out loud?!] end, It really seemed to work for me. But the purpose is to help land more hooked fish. when the fish is hooked on that back hook there is alot of play in the hook to line distance and the fish can shake loose much easier than being hooked on the front fish.

On a side note: biggest fish sunday was a 20″ smallie, est 4.5lbs. Very healthy fish.

Funny you mentioned the red hook thing..when I was on Fork I took off my back hook and changed the front hook with a bigger red one and it so the front of the rattle trap would dip down and make to run cleaner through the grass!!

Now hows that for an informative post

Something i thought of last summer but never got around to…….has anyone ever thought of puting a red dressed hook on a crank bait. By dressed i mean feathered of course. I wonder if it would really effect the action much. But that red feather might be a good touch in clearer water in the summer. At the same time that might be over doing it.

    Natureboy,

That’s good technique, but mostly implemented by walleye anglers. They tip the belly hook w/ plastics. Tipping the tail hook keeps the baits from working it’s natural vibration. I’ve not tried it for bass, but have tried for walleye. I have to be honest, I catch more fish w/o the added attractant.

yea i really like sticking to the basics alot of time. Crankbaits have been around forever and have caught fish forever so maybe i’ll spend more time fishing then preping my lures for a beauty contest

i am with you there, i am done making lures look pretty, i dont think there are too many fish that stop to look at the color of the hook on a crank, once they commit to whack it that’s it, also, i stopped painting jigheads, i go through 100-200 1/8ths a year and make my own, i’ve tested this theory on lakes and rivers with anglers at my same skill level, no difference, it’s all about the plastic
