i was told this weekend that with flurocarbon line you are not supposed to use a polomar knot because it increases line breakage?

The best know I have found to work is a Trilene Knot. Make sure you wet the knot. This provides lubrication, thus reducing friction and heat build-up when cinching the knot down.
April 6, 2004 at 11:59 am #299874I don’t know about the flourocarbon covered lines like
Vanish, and Fluorclear, but for the 100% fluorcarbon
Seaguar that I use, a Palomar Knot works great, for me.
Actually I tie Palomar Knots for braids, mono, and
fluorcarbon. Since I started doing that, I don’t have
knot problems anymore.Big Bass Bane
April 6, 2004 at 12:12 pm #299792I read an article where Aaron Martens suggested the San Diego knot for fluorocarbon line. http://shoreangling4u.tripod.com/knotguide/id30.html . If nothing else this site has every knot you can think of.
April 6, 2004 at 12:34 pm #299879Vanish and Flouroclear are two different lines. P-Line Flouroclear is a Flourocarbon COATED co-polymer line. Its supple, but has a lot of stretch is not as durable as a true flourocarbon. Vanish is 100% Flourocarbon, its not a coated line like the P-line. It’s tougher, has lower stretch, and the new improved formula is much softer than the original Vanish.
April 6, 2004 at 5:35 pm #299930I guess I need to correct my reference to Vanish being a
fluorcarbon coated line. I went to the Berkley site.
I could have sworn it was when it first came out…When it
first came out, it was trash. I guess Berkley has improved
it some since then. Anybody using Vanish? Feedback? I
have been using other brands of 100% fluorcarbon, to
include Seaguar, BPS, GM, and Cabelas, and all were about
the same, and much better than my first experience with
Vanish. I guess it may be time to try another spool.Big Bass Bane
April 6, 2004 at 6:15 pm #299934Nope, Don’t do it…
Fool my once shame on you. Fool me twice…. Shame on me!.
I will try a free spool but until I know it is a good product I am out if that test.
They have great baits but they should have never let the first run hit the shelves.
jcApril 6, 2004 at 7:53 pm #299955Hey Riverfan,
Thanks for the website. It is great for me…the knot tying challenged.April 6, 2004 at 8:20 pm #299959I can only say the “New” Vanish is leaps and bounds ahead of the old stuff. I had terrible luck when it first came out, memory, poor knots, etc. But for the last two years I have had phenonmenal success with it. Right know I use 8, 14, 17 and 20. I just ordered some 30lb. for flipping, we’ll see how that works out.
April 6, 2004 at 9:03 pm #299970i just tied that sandiego not it sinched up good but when i pulled the tag end it slid up the line is that what this is supposed to do?
why is this not so much better then the polomar not for flurocarbon?
April 7, 2004 at 12:21 pm #299907Dusty,
According to Aaron’s article knots that put lots of pressure on the wall of the line (cuts into) cause line failure. I invasion this chararistic like a graphite rod. It can take lots of flexing and bending along its length but has poor radial strength. I suspect you have seen what happens when you hit a rod on the side of the boat and the rod brakes on the next fish. I honestly have not used the fluorocarbon lines much. I did pickup a 3000 yrd spool of 17lb Vanish at the Berkley outlet for $15 so I started using it last fall. I didn’t experience the problems the BBB and JC did so I assume they improved the product. The curious thing about the line is when it brakes it almost shatters. The tag end looks like a horse’s tail.
