Spring Sun – Question for Discussion

So, in August when the sky is high, sun is out, water is warm… we know the fish will:
    A. Find Cover
    B. Go Deep
    C. Find Flowing Water

But, in April, when the water is cold, the current is flowing… do bass display the same action? Or, as they seek out cleaner, more stable water do they lay in the sun? Or, find cover? Seeing that the sun provides warmth, but also hurts their abilityy to identify objects for feeding… Thoughts?

Dude, they don’t care about anything but getting warmed up.
Put yourself in this type of situation.
You are freezing, hungry, and need a nice piece of… Well you get the picture.

First things first, You want to get warmed up. Bottom line. Then you need something in your belly followed by some “quality Time”
Now you are thinking like a bass.

    JC – Beautiful!

So, given your point… if there is structure nearby, would the fish rather get shallow on the flat where the water temp might be a degree or 2 warmer or relate tight “under” the wood/vegetation/etc?

Perhaps the bass are a bit prude or shy and need some “cover” while doing the deed…

I know I’ve hit spots on Pool8 when the main waters are about 40-50. These spots are big big bays with only 3-4 foot depths with littly to no cover. But with the bass boat I’ve marked low 60’s for water temp when 100 yards away the water is at 40-50. If you can find a spot like that. You are golden. This particular spot is crazy though. If the conditions aren’t perfect, you wont get bit.

I’ve seen them in the Spring sitting 6 inches below the surface on a warm day in a calm bay. Not sure they are always cover oriented. They are pretty darn spooky at this time though!!

Warmth also applies to the things bass eat, which also like the warmth and the food and the lovin.

Plus, if it is warmer where you are fishing, we don’t have to talk about vaseline and rubber gloves in the boat again!!!

good question- an offshoot i have wondered about is “mat flipping”- we dont really have the hyancinth mats like on the big O, but often with high spring water the shorline grasses and cover form mats – anyone ever flip in these like they do down south in the early tourneys?
