Well, after being out this past week and reading everyone else’s posts, fishing was far from spectacular. Especially Saturday w/the strong winds. I guess my question for discussion is: How does everyone fish high raging flood waters? Especially w/Colder water temps? Thoughts?

Find refuge, clean water and minimal current.

I’d have to agree with that.

The largies aren’t gonna wanna fight that current. They’ll, imho, seek out warmer water; on the way they may stage till there’s some stability in the temp which is dependent on the weather.

Now, the above sounds good & acceptable. It may even allow us to sleep at night, but the reality is this: Some days I have absolutely no idea why they don’t follow that lovely above paragraph. But, again, sometimes they do. For example.

Three days before I was on Kerr Lake two weeks ago, they were on secondary points & in the backs of bays. A few days of cold, bad weather, and they moved out to main creek points. It was still a jerk & crank bait bite, but they had moved quite a ways back out -about 500 to 1500 yards in some cases, but we did catch’em.

That cold water’s gotta be like the air conditioning at the theater. Yeah, the theater.

If I get a seat with mama; then I start getting slapped in the back of the brainpan with cold air, we move.

    Well, those are my $0.02.

    Thanks,

We are talking the Mississippi river. You will always find the majority of your fish looking in these places but will often find pods of fish doing there own thing.

Lakes as you describe have differing characteristics. The fish almost always head deeper and suspend on adverse weather conditions. One the of best spring locations is ripping a jerkbait off the tops of cedar trees adjacent to a spawning bay. If there is a creek leading out to this stand of trees you are in the money.
