Ringworms for Bass

Lately a backwater I’ve been fishing has produced alot of bass for people fishing nightcrawlers just off the bottom as well as some nice bluegills. Later this week I plan on jigging some ringworms through the ice. Has anyone tried this technique before and have you had success with it? I’ve had alot of success using ringworms in the open water but never have tried them through the ice.

The other thing I’ve noticed down here on Pool 10 is there seems to be an increase in the number of ring perch being caught. Last Friday I witnessed one caught (among many others) that measured 14 inches, the biggest perch I’ve seen come from down here. Perhaps in a few years the Mississippi might also be known as a perch fishery.

Yo Birdman —— The answer is yes !! I’ve used rubber worms for years, but usually cut ’em down to 3″. There are several things to consider: in choosing a worm your really targeting one specie of fish (Bass) so you better have your ice hole figured out pretty good ! Myself when ice fishing I’d rather use something that imitates a minnow, because more species in winter forage on something swimming into there very small strike zone.

Ringed Perch you lucky devil !!! The pool must be in good environmental shape !! Perch are not really a hardy fish.

Good news on the perch, they are probably my favorite fish! I like to eat them with a nice bottle of Keante(sp?) and some fava beans….

I used to catch a few perch while standing on the spillway of the lynxville dam, its quite a walk (from the iowa side is the only access).. but it was almost always worth it….

Nope that would need a Leinie. But the fries would be ok. Steve

THAT’S A NICE PERCH!!! These past few years we have been getting more and more 12-121/2inch perch but that is a nice one. Lawrence

Kensyl, I didn’t know that Perch were not that hardy a fish. It makes you wonder if the Perch population is indeed multiplying if those dreaded Zebra mussels are responsible for their comeback. I know I’ve caught more Perch this year than all my other ice fishing years combined.

Yo Bird – The Ringy are cold water love’n fish, that’s why I was fairly surprised to hear your on pool 10. They are pretty

scarce to rare as you go south on the river ! The poor fish

suffers from predation by more than half of the food chain and those devil Gill reek havoc on the nests and fry !!!

    Hey guys

I’ve noticed a marked increase in the number of perch getting caught on Pool 4 here up on my end. Size is getting pretty good with most running 10″ or so. I seem to run into a number of ’em in May out on Lake Pepin pulling #5 shad raps. I’ve discussed this with some old salts and they’ve told me Pepin and the rest of pool 4 used to give up good numbers of nice perch. Things got real bad and they became somewhat of a rarity but it seems that many people are noticing them making somewhat of a return.
