Keep them dry. But more importantly, don’t store them any place where you have salt or salt impregnated plastics. Salt absorbs moisture and will rust hooks everytime.
You know all the little white packets you get when you buy new shoes, beef jerky, and the such, well, instead of throwing them out, I use them in my tackle boxes and it works really great. It absorbs all the moisture.
I agree with carpgirl, and those little packs can sometimes be gotten for free from camera shops. If you can’t get freebies, the crystals sold in fly shops for drying out flies is the same thing. They usually come in a small plastic container, and you can make your own packs using coffee filter paper or nylon hosiery, and some super glue.
I think lead has some effect too. I don’t keep lead in same box as hooks. I keep them sprayed with “reel magic” during the year and then a light oil at end of year. Don’t have much rust problems.
I am cheapskate I guess. Hooks are probably the cheapest part of the tackle I still like to take care of them. IF they are rusted bad by new. Could have weakend them.
to the guys who are useing a light oil. have you ever worried about bass reacting different to your lure bc it have oil on it? i spray all of my hooks with pam cooking spray and i dont have a rust problem. just wondering
I agree with Blue Fleck and Slop Bass – just buy new ones. I am really good friends with the local Bait Shop, so I can get a really good deal on what I buy. Walmart is the next cheapest place.
