I am looking to buy a new Soft Jerkbait rod (Flukes, Sluggo’s). What is everyones take on the length/action/power. I am leaning towards a 6’6 Medium power, Extra Fast Action….let me know what you think.

Is that you Dustin (Stratos)? If so, I’m glad you made it.

As far as the soft jerkbait rod goes, just forget the entire technique and try to catch bass another way… Honestly…it doesn’t work

    BH,

I have a 6’9″ ML Extra Fast St. Croix Avid that was
designed as a Drop Shot rod, but makes for a killer soft
jerk bait rod, too. I have a Curado Super Free on it,
and that combo does a fine job with soft jerkbaits, and
tubes. The rod had good power, even with a ML rating,
for moving fish, but the very light tip(needed for Drop
Shotting), comes in handy for sensing something funny
happening at the end of the line

    Basshog,
Look at a 7′ rod or a if you want to stay with a 6’6″, then look at some that are Medium/Heavy action. In my opinion, no matter how hard you might set the hook, sometimes a Medium won’t have the juice to bury a 4/0 hook. Flukes, Slugs, and Senko’s have quite a bit of plastic to go through, a longer rod, like a 7′ will give you longer casts, more control over those bass, and better hooksetting power. What I have found to be the ideal rod is a 7′ MH rod that has a nice soft tip that tapers very quickly, it’s a Fenwick Techna AV. You’ll know the right rod when you feel it!

I use a AC66MF or AC70MF, both St. Croix in a medium action with fast tip. I agree that with thick plastics that a medium action provides more “horsepower” to set the hook and move the fish if needed. Medium light action will work fine if you use superline but I prefer medium for mono or co-filament lines.

Hey Dustin, I would’nt take any advice from D-Nort. I’ll use a crankbait style rod with a fast tip. Medium action will work great. You’ll get a better lure presentation, and with your hook set, your sure to drive the hook home. Just kidding by the way D-Nort, and thanks for the forum info.

I like to use a 7′ rod as well. The longer rod gives you better control on long distance casts as well as provides excellent leverage when you hook the hawg! I like a medium heavy action rod with a soft tip. The soft tip allows me to give the jerkbait a subtle action when necessary. The 7′ rod also helps you pick up the slack on the hook set. Rogue makes an excellent rod for this application.

    Dustin,

Take a look at the Falcon Wacky Worm Rod. The rod is 6’7″ and is a med/heavy action rod with a really nice tip on it to help cast the bait. The rod comes in both a Lowrider and a Cara. The Cara is a little better graphite but the Lowrider is a little tougher. The rod was designed by Clark Wendlandt of Texas. Ask around he is considered one of the experts on the subject of soft jerkbaits, senko’s and wacky worms.
