As I was packing up the boat this evening for another trip out on the water, the long look on my Daughter’s face told me I’d have a another fishing partner for the evening. So my Dad, Mattison and myself hit the water looking for some Bass for the upcoming Thursday night tourney.
Oddly enough, all we got the first few spots we pulled into was a skunk. It was a real bad bite for the most part. Nothing on topwater, nothing in the slop, not even a sniff on soft plastics…. just a tough bite all the way around.
In a last ditch effort to get something to stretch a line, we made our way to a spot that kicked out some decent but not all too big Smallies our last time out. Last time we were there we caught them primarily on soft plastics and topwater baits. Tonight, it was all about the topwater. With my first cast into the spot, I hooked up a scrappy SM Bass that I let Matti reel in. After a quick photo, I asked her if she wanted to try that all by herself, which she jumped at the chance. I tied on an orange mouthed Pop-R. I figured with the bright orange in the mouth of the Pop-R she’d be a able to see the bait and see when the fish would hit it. We were not disappointed…
Matti put on a clinic with that Pop-R. In 3 casts she had 3 real nice LM Bass in the boat. The biggest measured out at 18″.
I just stood back with a giant smile as she pulled those fish to the boat with her pink spinning combo. Grampa ran the camera and took some great pics. Now all I have to do is get Matti to hold her own fish…. That’s something to work on for the next trip.
That was probably the funnest evening of fishing I’ve had in a while. I cannot wait to do it again!
