Something Different on Pool 2

This morning I decided to combine my favorite things all in one place. I like Top water Bass fishing, I like Pool 2, I like fly fishing. So I launched on Pool 2 equipped with a couple of fly rods and several boxes of Bass Bugs and other flies. Almost immediately I was into fish. I was using my trusty Reddington 6 weight and I was throwing a simple foam head popper. The picture of the White Bass didn’t come out very nice but it was a heck of a fish. Several more followed and then the Smallmouth moved in. By watching for fleeing shad, gulls, and swirls I was able to get in position to work over several groups of fish. Later in the morning tyhe topwater bite tailed off and I had more success with a #2 Chartreuse Wooly bugger fished on a sink tip line. As you would expect, rocky shorelines held the most fish.

The river is down some more and the flow has really slowed down. A beautiful morning to be out on the river and you can’t be the action!

Cool report Steve! I was up on the Croix with Mike and his family and my son and some of Mike’s neighbors. Mike and I commented to each other how much you would get into flyfishing on the croix. Looks like it can be pretty good on P2 too!

I saw another guy in a Ranger fly-fishing on Friday night there on P2. He was putting the smack-down on smallies in the same general areas. I’m not a fly-fisher, so I’m not one to really judge a quality cast, but there is no doubt – this guy could get that bait out there. Even with a wind!
Too bad he didn’t stop to toss a buck-n-grub though. We also smacked a few really nice eyes on some of the same rocks. P2 is starting to really turn-on the Fall bite now with the slower flow and the cooler and lower water.

was just out on pool 2 targeting bass on rocky shorelines and caught 2 smallies biggest at 13 inches, 1 nice sized sheephead, and caught 2 nice largemouth in a backchannel in less than 2 fow. I was casting a 6 inch kalin glow in the dark white grub with 1/4 ounce jig. I’m heading back out with a slip bobber and nightcrawlers and probably drift along the rocky shorelines. Seen alot of baitfish activity in the backchannels as well.

I was just thinkin tonight man its been a long time since I’ve seen Pete out here.

I must say the smallmouth action on P2 seems to be improving every year little by little. I caught a bunch tonight and saw a bunch more feeding that I didn’t go after. Eventually somebody’s gonna catch a tanker down there.

Regarding the “other” fish we go after on 2…I managed 4 tonight, two bigger ones and two smaller ones…all on a single dam…and that was it. There were a lot of Mike’s out fishing tonight.

The FW and I spent some time down there tonight too. Nice to say hello to Mike and Mike. Once again some nice Smallies came to the boat. Mona was throwing a shallow running crank bait and I was pitching a Paddletail. We caught a lot of fish…Largemouth, Smallmouth, White Bass, Saugers, and of course I still have the hot hand with the Sheephead. Mona popped a Smallie that was right at 16 inches on her second cast. Another nice evening on the river!

I tried for small mouth this afternoon but could not catch one. At least Mike, the guy in the front of my boat caught one. Maybe next time.

I Hit Up A Back Channel With My Slip Bobber With Crawlers And Caught 20 Nice Sized Bluegills, About 10 Bass Small And Largemouth, 1 Northern, And 1 Sheephead. All Fish Were Caught In 3 Feet Or Less And Were Blowing Up Baitfish On The Surfice All Evening. Hope To Get Out Tomorrow And Get Into Some More Good Action.
