Personally I use a 7′ MH Techna AV casting rod. I will use a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook. For line – 17lb. Flourocarbon Vanish. The longer rod helps casting distance as well as hooksetting. I know some guys like using spinning tackle for this, but I tend to use baitcasting rods whenever possible.

I’m with RangerVMax on the baitcasting vs spinning tackle. If you get a good reel, and you are good with baitcast equipment, you can fling it 30-50ft, no problem.

I persoanlly use St Croix Avid 6’8″ Medium X-Fast Action with a Super-free Quantum or Curado and 15lb P-line and the 4/0 Gamma hook…

I suppose I ought to consider Sugoi line, though…

Dusty… I use 7′ 844 Loomis rods which are heavy action… I prefer 15lb P line, and I use 5/0 Owner riggin hooks, the extra weight in the hook versus a 3/0 helps them fall if I want it to do that…. I prefer Bass Assassins over Zoom Fluke type baits as well…. or Sluggo’s if big fish are around. I usually throw white or shad colors…

Funny you should write about jerk baits. I’m writing this from Kerr Lake, VA and we smoked’em yesterday on jerk baits (clown colored Rouge & chartruse shad Lucky Craft).

We used Shimano 2005Bs I believe with 7′ Castaway Rods (1/4 to 3/4ozs) and ten lb Stren.

Had about 15 with three well over four lbs. The last one was about six. Incredible fishing.

Well, that’s what I got on jerk baits.

Oh, it’s been in the 60s and sunny here… See you guys when I get back to WI.

    Thanks

    Oh, soft jerk baits.

10lb P-Line, 1/4oz-3/8 All Star rod, Curado reel & RC Tackle DOAs in a pearl color. 3/0 to 5/0 Eagle Claw hooks.

I’m used to a bait caster for all my stuff, but I’ve recently tried spinning gear. It doesn’t feel right to me; so I don’t use except for drop shotting & for a jig and worm combo.

    Thanks

You should try spinning gear, it make things alot easier. I like to skip flukes back under brush ,use a braid like power pro or fireline so you can haul em out after you stick em. If Iuse casting takle it will be a curado and 7 ft Avid with 4 or 5/0 wide gap hooks.
