Looking for non Rapala Crankbait suggestions.
    Mostly fat bodied lures.
In the past used a few Berkley and KVD lures seemed OK nothing special.
Any suggestions that are tried and true?

Have 3 Bill Lewis rattle traps and a few Flicker shads was not impressed with these at all half don’t even track right.
After adjusting still no good been tuning for years too much trouble they don’t cast to great with a bait caster that well either.
More a walleye lure though I understand that.

    Thanks

I use the Strike King KVD 1.5/2.5 and XD series for deeper. Have used them for over 5 years.
Have some Rap DT’s and they catch them about the same. Most of the SK’s seem to run pretty good out of the box. I upgrade the trebles so short shank trebles for a little more weedless (if that’s even possible) set up.

If I had to take only 3 cranks to cover most situations, pretty easy selection for me

1 live target lipless gizzard shad ( discontinued- eBay, close outs….

    2 manns -1

    3 Norman deep diver

Rapala DT-10. Works great from late Summer through late Fall. Ive had good luck with smallies and walleyes. Yes, walleyes. They aren’t the timid fish that only hit a Lindy rig.

Non-Rapala? Spro RkCrawler and OSP Blitz EX DR are excellent when you want to get down in that 10’ range and bounce around in rock and gravel. The Spro seems to back out of a lot of problems when paused. The OSP is a high end bait. Feider won a BASS event in which he credited the Rapala DT series on the stage but the livestream showed he was using the OSP much of the time. Pricey but effective. Make sure you have a plug knocker on-board. Also, I do still have a place in my heart for the old school Rebel Deep Wee-R.

Is there a reason you don’t like Rapala?? They do seem to work.

I’m not much of a crank guy but I have some old ones from Owner, Yo-Zuri, Spro, and Salmo.

My favorite crank for bass and summer musky is Poes Super Ceder 400, I bought a bunch back in the day, might find some on eBay.

Some great crankbaits are made by Bomber, Bandit and Norman. The Cotton Cordell Big O is still a classic too. Some are available through most online sellers and at Cabela’s, Bass Pro and Fleet Farm. For all the color options check out lurenet.com

I know you said no rapala, but I’m countering that by saying DT-10. All you could ever want in a crankbait.

The Rapala size 7 fat rap is my all time favorite crank bait. Unfortunately they are no longer sold. They are available on E Bay but you pay the price. The Norman lures deep little N has become my new favorite crank bait.

Old school Bomber Fat A’s and Storm wiggle warts – 2 of the best crank baits ever made. Of course they changed the design and material of both of them and they are not as good as the once were.

Sorry, I missed the non-Rapala topic. Anyone use Bagley’s? They always seem to be in the bargain bin.

Bagleys are solid. I just don’t think people know the name up here. They used to make one of the best topwater lures on the planet. I thinks the Bagley Bang-o. It looks like a Jerkbait with a prop on the back. You jerk it lightly and it goes about 5 inches under the surface while the prop spins and buzzes. Bass just crush it. I have to pay like $25 for them on eBay now.

I think Northland Tackle bought Bagley. That’s why Northland has the Rumble Shad now. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I’ve been experimenting with the new Hybrid Hunter. Not sure that’s what you’d consider as a fat body lure but it’s pretty chunky. I have the 1/2 oz Junior size and it displaces a fair amount of water. Only designed to dive 3-4 feet or so to deflect off cover. It’s a rip-rap killer lure..

How about YoZuri baits? Usually they are peddled on a couple Midwest Outdoors episodes. I have a topwater spook from them that I like.

I haven’t used any but they are definitely gaining steam. They are very trusted in the saltwater world and more and more guys using them freshwater now.

The Rebel Wee-Crawfish is one of my favorite smallie baits. More a casting bait but they do have larger ones that troll nicely.

I’m waiting for night time temps to start dropping. That seems to really trigger a frog migration to the river banks with the smallmouth just waiting for them to hit the surface. This also means a strike window that is very close to the bank.

I like those Rebel Craws, too. Pre-boat I used to wade the Kettle River and do pretty well with smallies and the occasional walleye. Snagged a big drum once, too.
