I’m heading to the big pond in 2 weeks for some bass and walleye fishing. I’ve never fished this lake in the fall and was wondering where to begin. I’m staying in the southeast side of the lake but I am willing to travel to find fish. What lures/presentations are best this time of year? Thanks in advance

I was out on the West side on Saturday bass fishing, only caught 3. They were all on 8-9 ft humps surrounded by deeper water. I’m still dragging Ned rigs. I have no idea of the weather in two weeks or where they will be? Soon they will start schooling up in winter holding areas. Just depends on temp and daylight. Much as it is everyday on Mille Lac’s wind will dictate what side to fish on. Last Oct. a friend caught his personal best shallow on the East side w. boulders in 3-4 ft of water.

This time of year its all about BIG creek chubs. 5-9 inch in length. You can use a Lindy live bait snell or if you have any #4 double wide hooks on a fluoro snell and using a barrel weight as a setup. Troll around rocky structure at around .6-.8mph. Keep the bail open and just wait for the feel of a fish grabbing that bait. You will feel that big minnow go nuts when its being chased. Once a fish grabs it let the line go for literally 30 seconds or so. The bigger minnows obviously longer. Then when you’re ready to set that hook reel in and sweep up.

You will get a mixture of smallmouth and walleye this time of year. The bite is starting to get good and will only get better.
