I am in the market for a new base layer for this winter. I have been looking at the under armor 4.0 and was just wondering if anyone on here has used this product and if so were you happy with it? Any feed back would be appreciated.

I love the Helly Hanson base layers. Never owned under armor myself.

You pay for a lot of marketing in under armor.

From what I understand of the UA Cold Gear, it is somehow designed to work when you are sweating. If I am outdoors and active, then nothing beats UA. But if I am just sitting there and not active enough to produce a sweat, then UA does nothing for me. Excellent product for athletes in cold weather, or even while I’m walking while pheasant hunting. Terrible product for me when I am sitting on the Ice not moving.

I used the UA 4.0 last year about half the time when I was filming the show. It wicked great, was warm, and didn’t breath the best. All and all it was a good base layer. I then switched to the Icebreaker Merino wool and wouldn’t go back. I have limited experience with other Merino Wool base layers, I just happened to buy the IceBreaker brand based off of reviews.

I have the Apex long sleeve for brutally cold days and the Oasis long sleeve for more mild days. I also have the apex bottoms.

Incredibly warm, it feels like you have something twice the thickness on in terms of warmth. It breaths exceptionally and doesn’t quite wick moisture as quickly as the Synthetics. The kicker is…even after 3 or 4 days living in it, it doesn’t smell. My UA stuff is almost unbearable after a 3 day filming trip.

I have the UA 4.0 and have been very happy with it. From ice fishing to boat fishing February-April I usually wear that jeans and insulated bibs and am plenty warm. As Ben stated it is rather ripe after a full weekend though lol

ive been rocking “Cabela’s Men’s MTP Polar Weight Crew” for a few years now. its normally around 50-70$ it will go on sale at least once a year for 19.99$ its very soft and comfortable and extermely warm. Its basic, unlike the UA stuff so if you are into flash this is not for you. I havent worn UA myself but i have heard good things from those that wear it.

Check out the UA Treestand Baselayer. It’s really nothing like the traditional UA Cold Gear. This stuff is much thicker and made of a different material. I don’t think you’ll find anything warmer.

I’m with Ben on this one – if you’re looking to spend that kind of $$ of a base layer set, merino is the way to go because of all the reasons he mentioned. Plus if you big game hunt at all and are conscious about odors, that should be the kicker towards merino.

Cabela’s has Icebreaker making their house brand merino and it’s nice stuff, sizing doesn’t work for me (it’s a short/boxy cut) but quality is good. Others to try are Smartwool, Sitka, Firstlite for hunting styles, some multisport stuff below. Good luck with what you decide.

I agree Merino Wool keeps you warm and wicks well. I bought the Carol Davis Web Foot Body Sock. It’s not Merino Wool but it sure is warm, wicks well, and is anti-bacterial. Unfortunately she closed her business due to health issues.

I love this for Bowhunting, Icefishing, and snowmobiling.

I use the Core system from Sitka and haven’t looked back. They also offer a merino line that is top of the line.
