How well do rapalas and other crank baits differ from the typical swim bait. Are thier actions similar or a bit different? OR if the swim bait is the hot bait dont try to go with a different lure?

Swim baits are different than stick or Rapala type baits. Most swim baits whether hard or soft are segmented to ungulate in the water to varying degrees. (at least the ones I’ve used). Savage’s 4-plays, Dunwright’s lifelike baits, Strom’s Kickin Minnow to name a few swim baits. Both stick baits (of which Rapala is most famous for, although they make a host of other non swim baits) and swim baits can be effective and I very often switch between the 2 on the same outing.

I use a pull pause technique. I pull the bait forward (2 to 3)’ then pause it while I reel up the slack and repeat. Often I let it dead stick for a brief moment prior to reeling in the slack. As for color try and match what they are feeding on. I use them mostly for toothy critters but catch some nice (3 to 6)LP bass at times while doing so.
