My 2000 Mercury 40hp-4 stroke motor is in the shop for repairs. It was running poorly, had a skip at top end and a hesitation coming out of the hole. They put in carb kits and changed the gasket to the water jacket. Now it runs well ( they say) but when returning to idle it revs to 2000 rpms. If they turn it off and back on it idles fine. They say I need a computer which is no longer available. Any ideas?
I find it hard to believe that there is not someone out there that makes a replacement for you. What is the computer part called? What is the serial number of your motor?

The serial number on the motor is 0G985078. They told me when I picked it up that at an idle the timing was jumping from 2 to 22. They checked the stator and the flywheel key. Their service manual said the computer was bad. Evidently the timing on this model is controlled completely by the computer. The numbers on the computer are 48 ECM-3 OOMY; 856178 3; P191231030. Not sure which is the part #
Looks like you need part # 87843302S. It’s a replacement for 856178T3.
Who might have one? Crowley Marine says it’s nolonger available.
