Backwaters/Sloughs

I have been scouting out a few deeper backwater and slough areas on the croix for shore fishing. I usually fish these areas with a minnow under a bobber higher up and a leech or crawler on the bottom. So far I have found some nice smallies usually on the minnows, but an inconsistent bite. Just wondering if anyone had thoughts or ideas on tactics on the different species that could be found in these waters.

I’ve found smallies on the Croix along the rip rap in the lower Croix.
Normally pitching and run into those other fish they call walleyes too. (

Certainly not a smallie expert by any means.

Marine on St. Croix to Arcola area could possibly be considered sloughs…?

I haven’t used live bait since I was about 12 so I can’t help you there, but I can reccomend a pearl/gray swimbait rigged weedless for these sections. Focus on the tops and bottoms of islands along with the standard sand drops.

I might also add that the early bird does not necessarily get the worm on the st croix. Some of the best smallie fishing occurs after 10:00 AM, so dont be afraid to plan your trip at odd “fishing hours”
