Guys I’m thinking about trying to create a few backup 12v Batteries for electronics on my Ontario trip. Note this is all “in theory” as I don’t know enough about MAH draw of 8 AA Batteries at once. If anyone can tell me if they drain 1/8 each or 100% each in parallel that would be helpful.

I bought this from Amazon for $5 and a bunch of the Amazon Basics AA’s as they are quality batteries (Note I only buy disposables when I have to, I prefer to use rechargeable for the environment. Classic Obama Amirite?)

My theory is that these should run about 1.3mAh at a 500 mAh Draw. 8 in this pack should make 12v and 10.4 Amp Hours. My standard Marcum battery is a 8ah.

This would weigh about 8 ounces vs 5 pounds and I could bring extra batteries easily. A 350maH open water finder could be powered by this for 20-29 hours in theory. I’ll test it out and let you know, chime in if you have ideas/advice.

    Thanks!

The flaw in your math is that if your 8 batteries were hooked-up in parallel, you’d get 1.5 volts at 10.4 amp hours. But,,, since you need to have them hooked up in series (to get 12 volts), you increase your voltage, but the amp/hours is the same as 1 battery.

HRG – So I’m looking at 12v and 1.3ah at 500mah right? Eff.

    2.35 hours isn’t very sexaaay

    Damn. Any other brilliant ideas?

So in theory 8 D batteries with a rating of 15000mah should be 15ah if I used 8 in a similar application

In theory. What I don’t know is if the mah rating “draw” is the same for 1.5V batteries, compared to 12V units. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are rated using different standards.

How about adding a solar charger and/or a second battery pack?

Thought about Solar Charging Grouse, might be a nice idea. I can’t tell if upgrading my recoil Evinrude to an Electric is worth it. Might be depending on the trip length I guess

Just buy a honda Gen. It’ll put out more energy per ounce of gasoline as a hundred AA’s.
LOL, ok, i didn’t really use any math there. But this is a funny topic!!

Or I could get off my ass and bring an extra battery! That would be too easy. Like my father says “you need to learn the hard way, everytime?”

I think I’m going with a Solar Charger Rollup – If it kicks out .9ah/hour I can replace 8-10ah per day pretty easy
