I spooled up with 832 ice this year. I read after the fact that I should have put some backing on mono first so the line didn’t slip on the reel?. Is this necessary?

    Thanks

You’ll definitely notice no backing when it’s real cold. I had to redo one of my reels because I had forgotten to put backing on.

Someone also said you could just put electrical tape on first around the reel. Has anyone tried that?

Both work. Without either, the line will slide on the spool under load.

I learned this the hard way this year. Didn’t back one of my rods with mono.. and I was in a world of hurt when the big one came alone. lesson learned back with mono.

So if it just do the electrical tape trick. Just make a few raps with the tape then add line like usual? That seems easier than messing with tying uni knots

I was wondering about this myself. If you were to use the electrical tape method, would you start the spool with an Arbor knot with braid?

Suggest you put a small diameter mono (similar to diameter of the 832) on for backing and more than you think because the 832 ice has a very small diameter. When attaching the backing to the 832 use a double uni knot. The braid must be spooled on very tight – it has no stretch and if soft spooled and you have tension (ie a fish) on the line, the braid will dive into the softly spooled 832. I use a lot of braid for the ice with slip bobbers – have changed from the compression knot stops to the rubber type – they seem to hold better and can’t come undone.

Actually I use the Alberto knot to go from braid to (mono or fluorocarbon). Great knot not near as bulky as the uni to uni knot. Just a thought.
Another benefit is you save money with the mono backer. Fill the spool with > 1/3 of low cost mono. This way you don’t have to use as much braid and mono will never hit the water.
