I received the Peak backup camera as a present at Xmas. I installed it on my ’11 Silverado and after having it installed for less than a half hour I took it out.
Reason one- pain in rear to install and shove all wires in tail light area of box to keep it out of the road grime.
Reason two- worked intermittently. Camera would come on for 3 sec., then out for 10 sec. Come to find out the Bluetooth in truck is on same frequency as camera.
Returned and didn’t buy a different replacement. My next vehicle will have a factory installed camera. Aftermarket IMO aren’t worth the money.
Factory installed on my Chevy 2012 I will not go without one now towards the next vehicles! Car or truck!
I didn’t really want to deal with wiring one into my truck, so I bought a IBall camera, made by AquaVu I believe. The video screen plugs into your 12v, then the camera just has a magnet so you can set it wherever. I think I used it once, then bought a new truck with a built in camera. Probably list it on IDO soon.
I bought a Swift Hitch wireless camera to help hooking up my wheel house. While it works well for intended purpose, I would not use it for a backup camera. The camera has a rather narrow close field of view and the screen size is very small, three inch I think. Also bought one of the made in china wireless cheapo’s off ebay for use behind the camper when pulling the boat. Waste of good money on that one. Very limited range, but it would make a fair backup camera.
Can’t help you with aftermarket but love the 8″ screen on the OE camera in my 2015. Makes backing up alone a breeze. Also helps with regular parking in parking lots or parallel.
It should be a standard feature on trucks. Don’t let aftermarket woes discount your views on a future OEM option.
I have a 2013 chevy and had a viper install. Picture is in my rear-view mirror. It was a little pricey. I like mine but I seen some that were bought from F&F that look good too! They were alot cheaper. Longivty was what I was looking for. Good like on your picking the one you like.
Tip, wire into running lights or a separate power source so you can see while driving down the road. I mounted a back up camera on my camper so I could see the boat as well as people tail gating me while driving down the highway.

I have a factory one and love it. If I’m not mistaken by 2018 they are to be required on ALL vehicles.
My 2015 Chevy came with one I would not buy another truck without one. No more jumping in and out of the truck to see how close you are. Even better at the Hotels when you can’t stay hooked up to your boat.
You guy are gonna make me get a new rig. I have a company van so I don’t use my truck a real lot….week ends mostly. I just bought a new trailer for ice fishing. 14 x 7 w/ 5′ V nose all aluminum. Mainly would like the camera for hitching her up. I ain’t 25 years old any more. Thanks for the info…..
I have been hooking up trailers for more years then I care to think about. Once you get use to picking spots in your mirrors to aim for hooking up isn’t that bad. Or so I thought My 2014 Dodge truck has the camera and I will admit it’s the one thing about the truck I absolutely love. Won’t be without one ever again. As for after market I can’t help you at all.
