Ok, blast me for having an open mind but I kind of opened my eyes a little after I heard Lucia on Beyond the Pond yesterday.
He basically said the B1G has some of the best competition in NCAA. Sure the rivals are gone, it’s part of the reason attendance is down. Another big reason is that the gophers charge twice as much as anyone in the NCAA. They also gave up a lot of seats to corporate partners that are simply not filling the seats.
I too miss the old WCHA but it’s gone and it ain’t coming back PERIOD.

Yes it’s gone and many fans aren’t coming back either. But thats neither here nor there. Somebody will be crowned college hockey’s best then it’s onto baseball. Depending on who is in the title game I may watch it if I can find it.
Lower prices an promote student attendance. They will come back. They eliminated an entire student section at Mariucci. Get students in the seats.
Not sure that’s going to happen though. They can’t even get them to attend a football game.
Not looking to start a argument but how can you lower prices when you will have 2 coaches on the payroll? They say Lucia is taking a reduced salary in his “advisers” role but that is yet to be determined.
Anyway if they don’t win nobody is showing up. You can’t expect people to go to games on Tuesday or Wednesday early.
Am I correct in it’s Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Denver?

You’re reading too far into it. How do they justify ticket prices to begin with? Being only 1 of 3 programs that actually turn a profit, I’m not convinced that turning a profit is high on their list anyway.
Being a resignation, he’s not going to be making a full salary anyway.
This impressive showing for the B1G conference only helps to promote NCAA college hockey.
The biggest Programs in college athletics are now also bringing NCAA hockey into the National spotlight.
Call me a cynic but I don’t think he resigned. I think Coyle told him the option is quit and I will keep you around to the end of your contract , or I will fire you.
Anyway without the BIG$$ money there won’t be a profit. Won’t be a profit in Basketball, won’t be a profit in football. Just spent millions on a Athletic Village. But, they always have the option of raising tuition again.
Yes……if UMD is in I have a reason to watch it.

No Sir, UMD defeated AF yesterday and advances to the Frozen Four.
And an answer to your question regarding Lucia…reported in today’s Sunday Strib.
“Don Lucia will make the same amount as a special assistant to the athletic director over the next 14 months as he would have as Gophers men’s hockey head coach next season. Lucia, who resigned Tuesday, will make $630,000 during his tenure as a special assistant to Mark Coyle.”

I’m sure you’re right. Same happened Woog. I still doubt he got his full contract though.

Well, there it is. Only 14 months though.

It’s a New Era!
Butts in the seats are not the driving source of revenue as it once was.
Good thing for the programs is the old guard/season ticket holders are no longer attending. Corporations and Sponsors fill the revenue streams, the empty seats still generate the money.
They will fill the seats again.
New Coach,New students,New fans, New Teams, New Era.
Change is hard for the Old Guard.

It will be on one of the ESPN channels, just like the semis were this weekend… The MI Tech/Notre Dame game was one of the best OT games I’ve seen in a long time!!! Was really impressed with OSU’s victory over Denver last night too.
I hate all that has happened to college hockey and blame the B1G and their television… but I will forever be attracted to the WCHA and the Frozen Four… and no one made it from Hockey East this year!!!

Oh my what will Barry Melrose do without a Big East team to cheer for? If you ever watch the final four when he is announcing it seems there is no other division in hockey except the Big East.
Im just as guilty as anyone bashing the big ten hockey conference but they are clearly able to compete on a national stage. As for the regional set up Minnesota teams got lucky that a great air force team didn’t take them all out. Seemed a little biased making all the mn teams come through the same regional. The way I see it there could be been 2 mn teams represented had they been in different regionals. Oh well despite their best efforts no big East teams made it. Congrats to the big ten teams. Go Bulldogs!

Agreed. Thought that was some interesting seeding, two ways to look at it, either they stacked that regional to all but ensure a MN team made it to the Frozen 4 in MN. Or they made it so Big 1$ conference had the best opportunity to shine, and make it so MSU-Kato, UMD and SCSU weren’t all in the Frozen 4 in the U of M’s backyard.

What’s interesting about that is I looked at the top attendance numbers (at least for home games) for 2017-2018 and the top three teams were:
1. North Dakota
2. Wisconsin
3. Minnesota

The tickets sold and/or announced attendance does not always equate to the number of folks actually at the game. This has been trending with the Gophers for a number of years with season ticket holders not showing up and with waning interest, less opportunity for resale.
I have heard that Wisconsin attendance is way down too, but with the 18,000+ seat capacity of the Kohl Center, even half full puts at the number at 9,000 people.
ND…I can imagine they still fill the new Englstad. What else to do in Grand Forks?
