What kind of vehicle is it for? I’m pretty far but I can tell you what we would charge to kind of give you an idea when looking. Is it painted already or a new one?

Rear tailgate on a 2017 F-150, My trailer hitch came off and punched a hole in it. I can get a used gate but need to paint match it to my truck.

Call my old lady at fairway auto body. Vadinais heights. Tailgates are not cheap neither is paint. Typically a insurance claim

$650-$700 in the Cities plus $560 for the tailgate.
I have a $1000 deductible so trying to just pay out of pocket.
One shop quoted me $1800 another $1600

I came up with 570.87 to prep and refinish.

You came up with a price without knowing the paint code? Or did I miss something?

    $500-$700 seems about right though.
$1800 seems really high unless you have a candy red tri-coat paint or something similar

    1800 for a 3 stage paint I would assume.

I closed my shop 5 years ago. Be thankful you didn’t choose the King Ranch model. 5 years ago a tailgate was over $4500 plus paint and assembly. But I used a salvage yard that was linked to tons of other yards. He was amazing locating parts in the correct color. He had a good tract record finding me mirrors and bumpers that I could bolt on and save customers a ton of money.

For shitz and giggles, I just figured a 2017 RAM Tailgate refinish.. with the fancy paint it comes to $840.

I haven’t estimated painting for 5 years. But refinish time for a tailgate should be about 5.5 to 6.0 hours. At $60 an hour that’s $360 labor, add $250ish for paint, materials and tax. That estimate is very accurate. 3 stage finish would add about $150. The high estimates are a short version, they aren’t interested in painting a used tail gate you purchased. The profit for a shop replacing a tail gate is selling the tail gate. Painting it has a very small margin. Only a shop really needing work would be interested. Not unlike if you bought a furnace and called a HVAC contractor to install it. Or a steak and carried into a restaurant. At $60 per hour, a shop will starve in short-order without parts sales. Compared to Mechanics, plumbers etc. at $100 to $150 an hour.

Sorry, The $1800 was for removal and reinstall, of a new tailgate that was painted.
Found a new take off tailgate for $500 and a body shop that quoted me $500 if I stripped the handle, hinges and tags off of it and I reinstalled the parts after it was painted.
