Not a big crash, just a small dent repair. It happened a few years ago on a car I’m looking at buying. It’s a 2008 Ford Mustang in highlander green.

Roughly what would this run to bring it back to new, dent repair paint etc?

Is the paint cracked? Have a paintless repair shop look at it.

Is that a transition point/sharp edge of the body? It may require a full panel replacement.

A good PDR guy could remove it about 80%. Outside radius helps, but body line is bad. I would try it. Doing PDR before a conventional repair. It would likely not need filler beyond primer if you don’t like PDR, and go conventional repair. By no means needs replaced. Bad news. For color match the door will need blended. Doing it right would involve. Pull headlight, loosen bumper, remove any other fender trim. Pull interior door panel, mirror, door handle, belt mldg, etc. My guess about 12 hours at 60 some bucks an hour, plus $300. Materials, tax, fees. Been away for 5 years. Prices can vary greatly, as can quality. Part of the reason I bailed early. Insurance companies had beat the business to a pulp. A lot of shops lowering their quality to kiss ins. co. butt, and work for their price. When I quit our rate was $60 per hour. Mechanics were $110, and I payed $130 to have something fixed on my camper. Still good shops out there. But they will be to the upper end of price as well. I see more and more bad repairs on the road. Glad I’m out.

My lady friend runs a body shop in vadnais heights and they are top notch. You should contact them and get the true opinion. There pdr guy worked absolute miracles on my rig after softball sized hail smashed in my cab corner and my window bar. Both very difficult areas to redo and it looks like it is brand new

It sure appears that the paint is chipped and bare metal is showing on the top part of the dent which makes me think that PDR is not an option.

I’d be willing to pay good $ for the repair, to a point, if I knew it would be 100%. Not looking for a cheap fix.

I’ll PM you Bearcat for that contact info.

I agree to try PDR. Make sure to find a good guy. A lot of Car Lot grade PDR guys out there. Your dent is small, but the sharpness of the bend will have stretched the metal. Baseball type dents have gradual bend that don’t stretch the metal as much. They give a bigger area to hide the excess metal.

Auto body guy here. What stevenoak said is right about all the R&I’s for the fender and blending the door. I would say he was probably a little high about time tho. I would guess maybe 2hrs for repair on fender then another 5-6 for R&I’s and paint. So about 8hrs at 60 an hour and another 40 an hour for maybe 3hrs for paint materials. I would say your somewhere between $600-700 for the repair. That’s just a guess based off the one picture. Also I don’t do the estimates I just fix them but have been doing it for 17+ years.

I estimated for 45 years. But not for the last 5. Doesn’t look like the body business has experienced the increased income of other businesses. Although I knew a lot of adjusters that said 100 miles could change prices 30%. I spent my whole career one mile from a $2 higher labor rate. Different State Farm Claims area.

What am I missing on the door. You say the door would need blending and other work. I don’t see any damage on the door. Are you saying if they paint the panel it may not be a 100% match to the door?

Yes. You see cars that a part may appear to match, then from a different angle, or light. It can look completely different. Or vice versa. Automotive paint repair may be the most underpayed profession on earth.

I set up a similar repair on my mother-in-laws Thunderbird. She’s got a whopping 11,000 miles on it since brand new and still has the plastic on the floormats. She got dinged and it appears to be similar.

The best autobody guy I know took care of it, but she was around $1200 into it when all was said and done with correct blending and other steps mentioned above.

If you can find someone under a grand that does quality work, that’s probably a major bargain in today’s labor market. My guess is if you’re in the metro area you’ll be well over a grand.

Repair estimate was ~$1,500 which sucks because that pretty much knocks this car out of the “reasonable deal” category.

Will the guy come down a grand. If so that’s fair for both parties

That seems like a reasonable offer. What’s the worst thing he could say?

He did come down a grand for that and the CD player that doesn’t work (yeah I know but I actually want a CD player so there’s $500 for a new improved unit) so that’s $2K after his asking price which brings me nudging up on asking prices from dealers on the same car without any issues.

He dropped his price a grand for this reason. This also has the Shaker 500 sound system and the CD player does not work (old school but I want a CD player) so that’s another $500 or more to have that replaced with something decent. $2K on top of his asking price and I can get the same thing from a dealer with no issues for similar $.
