The FW and I are taking a trip to Austin, Texas and wondering if anyone has any must do/see recommendations? Mostly going to be eating and drinking our way around town, so probably no fishing, just other fun. Thanks!

Do you play Poker?

I’ve made a few donations in my day, so not well . Gambling wouldn’t be very high on the to-do list for us.

We would get off sale at last call from a bar then walk to a club. The clubs would have water troughs full of ice to keep it cold. Stay and party all night.
Lots of good restaurants in the same area.
If your up for a little drive. The Alamo and river walk in San Antonio are nice.

Grannies Tacos for Mexican (Juan in a Million) for breakfast tacos. Also VAMANOS.
They had Chinese 1 night at Lin Asian and Dumplings he said outstanding Chinese food.
He said it is a long wait at Franklin’s but was well worth waiting to get in.Mango TangoPosts: 26April 20, 2022 at 8:11 pm #2117901Torchy’s Tacos which is a quicker growing specialty regional chain and if you do want to get out of town more Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor. Very well known but much more classic, small town BBQ place than the city joints! Can’t go wrong either way though

I’ll be going to Sams Town Point the next time I’m there, it’s owned by a local musician and is a regular spot for locals and local musicians.
The continental club is awesome if you like music, so is the White Horse.
Too much to do in a weekend.

Its a beautiful town/area. I forget the name of the bar, but they had great dancing it was a good old fashioned honkey tonk type bar.
Ive always wanted to go to Franklins since he is a legend, but I have heard the wait isnt really worth it and the other BBQ joints are better and much less wait.April 26, 2022 at 9:01 pm #2119492Ever since hearing about it on meateater I’ve wanted to eat at the Dai Due restraunt, sounds delicious.

Great reminder Weedis! We went there Thursday night, and it was probably the highlight of a fun trip. Absolutely amazing meal, with Texas sourced ingredients, including wild game. We had apps of a charcuterie board, and wild boar flautas that might have been the best thing we ate there, and it was all very good. Wife had a poached drum (the fish) dish with creme crepes that was amazing. I had Wild Boar confit that must have been finished on the grill/smoker bc it was super crispy yet still moist and delicious. This place was not cheap (even with passing on the 16 oz dry aged Waygu Ribeye at $93 and the Nilgai Antelope Leg Filet at $61), but well worth it and I would put it up against any of the finer dining establishments I’ve been to in MSP.
As for the rest of the trip. Breakfast tacos were everywhere, and great. Same with biscuits, Slake and Fixe were two breakfast spots we went to that were very good and reasonably priced. Had Terry Black’s BBQ twice, and would run back there again if I’m ever back in Austin. Didn’t mess around with Franklin’s as everyone said the line was crazy like 2+ hours and many people had said Terry Blacks or a couple other places were as good or better. Stagger Lee Brisket Nacho’s one night on Rainey Street was very good too. Rainey Street is wild, it’s like neighborhood houses made into bars, and absolutely packed at night. And 6th Steet (Dirty 6th as the locals call it) was even crazier, like 50 bars right in a row of every genre, and they close the whole street down to traffic. West of Congress on 6th was a little more our tempo, again a ton of bars and decently busy, but not the chaos of Dirty 6th or Rainey Street. Zilker Park/Barton Springs was very cool public natural pool that was spring fed clean cold water and great people watching.
We had a fun trip, weather was great and the food was excellent. Not sure I’d rush back as the homeless problem is bad, and most people said this was way better than it had been. Saw a lady with no pants shaving her head in the window of a business on our way to breakfast one morning. And there’s about 10 e-scooters for every homeless person, so you are constantly dodging one or the other walking down the sidewalk. My wife didn’t feel safe walking around at night even with me, which sucks as it is a very walkable city. We stayed at the Royal Sonesta hotel, a block off Dirty 6th, about a mile to Rainey, and a mile to West 6th. Went to the bat bridge one night, but they didn’t come out until well past dark and mainly stayed under the bridge. Austin was described as a blueberry in a bowl of tomato soup politically and I’d say that fit as well.

Nope, and no big comedy shows or concerts while we were there either.
