Auger Mount for Shelter Sled

I ended up going with a Clam Legend XL Thermal for those long trips on foot. The square footage and weight was hard to beat. The problem I now have is the footprint of the sled is so small, I need to find a way to mount my auger somewhere on the sled while still having a functional flip over once I arrive at my destination. I will obviously take the auger off the mount/rack once I arrive, but need something that won’t be in the way while fishing. Does anyone know of any products or have any ideas/pictures of something along these lines? I was thinking of something along the lines of a gun rack for an atv, but wanted some other input. Thanks in advance!

I don’t know how you would mount it on a sled/shack but clam makes an auger mount for atvs.

I really figured more people had done something like this to free up floor space while pulling on foot. Thanks for the suggestions.

I’d figure some way to strap it to your back. Thighs can only handle so much, kind of like carrying a backpack. Then I could put a chewbaca facemask on the power head and people would see this 2 headed monster coming and get the hell out of my hotspots. But that’s just me.

LOL! There’s an idea! It’s not a weight issue, but a sled footprint issue. I’m moving from a longer sled to the Legend XL sled which is more square than rectangular. I’m just having issues getting everything but the kitchen sink packed into that sled. If I had a way to get the auger off the pile and into its own space I would be in business. Maybe like an ATV gunrack type system that could be turned down when not in use…IDK!

I don’t have pictures right now, but I have an auger rack on the back of my one man.
Works as slick as you’d think. Used it all last winter.
Combined with perminately attaching skis to the one man sled it’s a ‘hole hopper’ with a 20# tank, sunflower, rod gutter, tackle, bait, fish bucket, and all with the easy pull of a light hand.

Pictures are on an old phone and the one man is still tucked behind the constantly used boat… But it’s about as basic a mount as you can imagine.

Would love to see some pictures whenever you get the shelter out!

After a week of trial and error I think I finally came up with something that should work. I picked up a set of Kolpin Rhino Grip XL Gun Mounts at Cabela’s for $23. I initially wanted to mount these to the sled, but I couldn’t find an ideal spot for that. I wound up mounting them to the bottom pole (when shelter is deployed). This allowed me to get the auger off the sled and opened up room to even get a stack of buckets under it. I also used some shorter bolts than the ones provided to keep my fabric from snagging. If you don’t have shorter bolts, the mounts came with caps to put over the ends of the bolts. While on the water, I don’t have to adjust the mounts or take them off to maintain a functional flip over. If you want to put your cover on, simply remove the auger and fold the mounts down. These mounts are also removable by simply pulling the catch clip and removing the mount. Due to the mount being so close to the pole bracket, I think this will provide extra support and you shouldn’t have to worry about bending or breaking a pole. I also think this should be a universal option across all flip over makes and models.

Wanted to say thank you for the idea. I went and got the Kolpin mounts and it’s a nice simple attachment for an auger or other long item like a Mega Live pole. I don’t think I’d trust the strength of the mounts when pulling behind a vehicle, but for walking around, I’m excited to be just a little more organized. On a Legend XL as well.

After gun deer season around here Walmart blows out the deep “deer sleds” I picked one up for around 28ish. Since I normally pull with atv, I hitch it to my flip and drive out. Once set up, I have it rigged for hole hopping.

One I see a lot on small flips is the black pvc culvert pipe. Guys use 3/4” conduit to make brackets to stand off the pipe from the shack. I like that when the auger is slid in, the blades and the auger edges are covered. Protects the fabric when hiking around and easy slide in/out for use
