Was up North the last few days in the Minoqua area. Was on a journey this am and wife’s sled (Polaris Classic 500) died in it’s tracks. She was running about 30mph around a corner and got on it, the throttle would not respond and the sled cut out and coasted to a stop. No overheat light, no funny smells, no funny noises or booms… By the time I noticed she had stopped and got back to the group I was leading the hood was up, uh-oh. Could not pull re-coil even a 1/2″ and electric start just made a small click. Took off the belt and dragged it back to the nearest road. We came home tonight as our snowmobiling is done for the weekend now. Anyone have thoughts of what it might be? Anyone know a good engine mechanic close to Madison, WI. I usually bring the sleds to John Hartwig’s for small stuff, but not sure they are the ones for this.

Looked them up, shows they are a concrete contractor? Have they done work for you in the past, what is the word on them? Thanks for the contact.

The early 500’s including the indy trails had issues if they weren’t fogged properly, and the conditions were right the crank bearings would get rusty in the off season and would sieze the begining of the new season, or sometimes rather than sieze the bearing would start to come apart and the parts would fly around in the case until they would break up enough to take out a piston by lodging in a port sticking a piston. Some people assumed it was the ring breaking, and would replace the piston and cylinder, and not look at the crank because it still spun freely. Then after it had the new piston in the same thing would happen again. If a piston is stuck look at the underside of the piston to see if there are marks on the underside from debris hitting it, before they assume a ring broke or a wrist pin clip came out.

Had put about 500 miles on prior to the incident this year since running out after fogging. New plugs two days and 200 miles prior.

    Sled is a 2005

It was the fuji made engines that I had seen the issue with, so that isn’t the case with yours. Won’t know for sure until you pull it apart. Good luck
