ATV Tire Repair

    Evenin’ all,

Wondering if anyone had any suggestions for ATV or tire shops in the metro that would repair/replace a tire for my Sportsman. It’s got a slow leak and I don’t trust it with ice fishing just around the corner. It’s got plenty of tread left, so if I can avoid a new tire, and just have them put a tube in it, that would be ideal.

    Thanks!

Pretty easy job that any tire place should be able to handle. You could try doing it yourself. We always patched our own ATV tires and running around on the farms growing up we fixed a lot of them. My neighbor had a tire with 12 plugs in it before he finally replaced it.

Yeah, you would think, but I’ve been striking out with calls to tire shops. I’m about ready to try it myself. No one wants to try to fix it, just sell me a new one

Go to a Nothern tool and buy a tube to fit the tire size ,break the bead, remove valve stem ,install tube(careful not to pinch tube),fill with proper air level.

    Total cost around $8.00-$12.00

take a pitcher of water and find the leak. If it’s the bead then you need to break the bead and reseal. If it’s in the tread a simple plug kit will fix it.

Take it off and stick it in a tub of water check for bubbles and plug it yourself. Check the valve core and the bead seal while you are at it.

If you put the tube in yourself, be sure to inflate the tire, then let the air out before putting in the valve core and inflating to the correct psi. Letting the air out the first time gives the tube a chance to get rid of wrinkles from sitting in a package. Before tubeless tires this was sop.

Check with Honda Town in Minneapolis. Marshall should be able to get you squared away.

Remove the valve stem, let the air out of the tire. Put a bottle of slime in and re inflate. Go for a drive to spread it around and it should last the life of the tire.

The only thing this doesn’t take into account is that sometimes the thing that’s causing the leak is still stuck in the tire. Therefore, it could also puncture the tube.

I’d personally trie the tire slime route, myself.

All excellent points. I think I’ll try the slime, first. I don’t do a whole lot of trail riding, if any. Mostly just ice fishing and working around the cabin. It should hold up fine.
