Side by Side UTV

I have been thinking about purchasing a side by side UTV. I am undecided on new or used and brand. Of course to me the most sold are Polaris Rangers. Does anyone have any recommendations on the Rangers? Any year or size that are better than others? Maybe another brand is better than the Rangers? It will be mainly used for ice fishing and driving into town for fun. If I am correct they are street legal as long as you stay off state highways. It will not be used for trail riding. Towing capacity is a must for towing the wheelhouse. Any opinions would be great. Thanks

Check out the new Yamaha Viking. UTV are legal to ride on the road, but not street legal. I know sounds stupid but what it means is there could be a local ordinance against it. Check your local laws.

In 97′ the roofing company I worked for got a 6 wheel JD Gator. I still have that Gator and it looks like id drove straight through HE77 and came out the other side. Each tire has about 2 gallons of SLIME and atleast 100 nails. I have had 10 square of shingles in it and it has fallen off a 6′ tall dumpster.

They have since moved to the new Diesel Gators and when I left them 2 years ago I had 2 years of use on that Diesel gator. The ride may not be as smooth as a Ranger but in my book the Gator is twice the work horse compared to Ranger. JD gator comes in a variety of models and I would at give them a serious look.

Can am I have a maverick but the commander is quite a work horse. lots of power. I would test drive a few different models and see for your self. Use to be a die hard Polaris fan but now I would have a hard time ever leaving a can am. The commander has a nice bed and a small storage compartment under the bed also. The side by side are a blast to own you’ll love whatever you find.

Polaris makes the new JD Gators to their specifications. I think if I had the money I’d go a tracked Polaris, but I don’t have the money so here I sit.

I have a 800 6×6 Ranger. Its a very capable vehicle pulling wagons, hauling deer up hills, and wood. It’ll go thru all snow less than a foot, often more. It does not fit in the back of a toy hauler ice house though. However, its in the shop with oil and antifreeze consumption issues at only 200 hrs. Nothing I did (that I know of) so that’s disappointing. Extended warranty company is putting me thru the ringer trying to get out of their commitment. Next time I’ll set aside the $ and fix it myself.

I don’t know about the others but the Arctic Cat make a good one for all round. I also agree with the JD gators diesel. I think those would be a good one for work. I also think Kubota makes one and I would say check that one out as well. Good luck. Post pics when you get one.

I think a national publication just did an independent study on UTV’s and the new John Deere sport model came out on top of everyone.

I can’t imagine if you went with any of the big names you would be disappointed.

I’m not a fan of polaris ATVs but for ice fishing I do like the rangers since a auger actually fits in the box without hanging out. A friend I fish with just picked up a new 900xp to replace his old 500 ranger and its a whole different machine.

Is there any known issues with Rangers that 2006 to 2008? I am thinking about purchasing one strictly for ice fishing. I am sure it will get used once in a while during the summer and fall, but it’s going to be mainly for ice fishing. I’ll likely put chains on the tires for the first year or two and then invest in tracks.
