changed atv drive belt – not shifting right

I changed the drive belt on my 2005 polaris sportsman 500 and it doesn’t seem to be quite right. It is engaging a bit at idle so it doesn’t want to shift. It shifts fine after I start it, but if I run it a bit and then stop and try to shift, it won’t shift.

Does it just need to wear in a bit or do I need to get a different belt? It runs much better now as on the old belt it took a lot of gas to get it to move.

Try flipping the belt around. See if that makes a difference.

High idle, belt on backwards could be problem.

Does your 500 have EBS? Special notched belt for that, some after market belts wont work right on EBS sportsman.

It does have EBS and it is an after market belt. I ran it today ice fishing and even though it is working a bit better, it still isn’t right. I will have to get a different belt.

In all my years of sledding and now quading I have come full circle. I now only use stock OEM belts. I know they cost more but belts last so long anyways its not a big deal.

They just seem to be more consistent.

I should have known better. It wasn’t that much less expensive, but I needed it in a couple days and the after market was the only option I had where I could get it fast enough. I have the OEM belt on order now, but no idea when it will show up.

I used to buy any new hi-po belt that came along for my fast sleds. They usually required clutching to match the belt and they were always of a harder compound that many times resulted in a belt grenade. Good luck.

Or after a few miles the belt will wear a little and shifting will be back to normal.

I put a new OEM belt on it tonight and now it runs like a dream. Of course, now I’m stuck with a belt I can’t use that has about 3 miles of use.
