Anyone run chains on the back of your ATV? If so what is a good brand? I am thinking for ice fishing.

I have on a rear wheel drive 4-wheeler, they worked well. I think I bout the 2 link spaced v bar ones from TireChain.com

I have a 4 wheel drive atv now with mudder tires so no need for chains except maybe on glare ice.

I have a set for mine, but I rarely used em since I also did snow removal with my ATV. Couldn’t even tell you what brand they were, but they were always a pain in the to put on and keep tight.

I also never ran into a situation where I really needed em.

I have a set of V-bar chains on my wheeler. To keep them tight I purchase some cheap rope from the hardware store and make a star pattern tightening the chains across the hub. They stay tight and I can get more speed getting out to my favorite fishing spot.

I have some from Moose (web search for their ATV site), V style as well. Honestly, they are great on clear ice, or may make a bit of a difference in really close to getting stuck situations. That said, I have had them on, but not for a couple years, as said, they are a pain in the rear, and rarely needed. I actually used the front much more often on glare ice for steering, and never even put the rears on.

I have had on the rear for 4 years.. this year I also put the fronts on. With the amount of snow we had early, I literally could not steer on the lakes, with chains just on the rear. They were a lifesaver early season this year. For those who struggle with keeping tight, a bungee cord attached also in a star pattern will keep them cinched up With the front one’s, they came with the fancy spring set-up

I bought the moose ones also thinking I would need them for ice fishing. Only time they have been on the machine were when I put them one to ‘try it out’. Packed them along with that whole first winter but never needed them on the ice, so now they hang on the wall waiting in case I get a plow for it someday. Never had the atv on ‘glare ice’ though. Thats on a 4wd rubicon.

I fish Mille Lacs quite a bit…. most travel is on roads which =’s glare ice I won’t go without em. Literally takes me 5 minutes a tire to install and they stay on until spring

I don’t know the brand for sure but I get them from Fleet Farm. Chains all the way around on my Kodiak and Ranger.

Unless you are only plowing snow on the ice, I would recommend against using the chains. You can shred some serious asphalt with em!

They’re kind of like chains. Only better.

Those will be my next major ice fishing purchase. How are they on glare ice (not that I see glare that often)? Are studs needed?

I really haven’t had them on ice yet. (Haven’t had much ice yet this year.) The only ice was underneath the snow that I was pushing. With tires, I was spinning, with the tracks, I was moving snow. Night and day difference.

$45 for chains or $4500 for tracks..
