ATV Tire and Rim Question

I have a Honda 420 Rancher that has 24x10x11 tires and rims on the rear, 24x8x12 on the front. I’m looking to buy a new or used set as a back up. Do I have to get the exact factory size tires and rims, or will different sizes work?

Rubbers or rims and tires. My Honda now has bigger tire on front and back, and wheels. You can go bigger on both tire and rim if wanted or just tires. Just look up what size rubber will fit. 26s I believe tuck under a rancher.

I would think like any 4×4, as long as they are the same circumference front to back, your fine.

You need to match the big number.
The rim size don’t matter. You can use 26 front and back if you have the clearance.

Bigger tires should fit fine if that’s what you want to do just know that not all tires run true to size. Some run small so a 26 in one brand will only measure 25in. Here are 2 different 26x9x12 tires that I have and you can see they are not the same height.

I’d caution throwing the biggest tires that fit on a mid sized ATV. You will likely experience performance changes. There are pros to the larger tires, but associated cons as well.

Thanks for the input so far. My current tires have studs in them and I want to be able to switch them out when I occasionally use the machine before there’s ice on the lake. I’d much prefer to go the cheaper, used tire route and didn’t know if I had to have the exact same match.

That being said, anybody have used tires and rims you want to part with?

26s on a rancher give 0 performance changes. I’d like to hear any cons you have. Which I’d imagine will be none given I’ve personally done it with a rancher 350 and 420.
I have personally been running 26s on Hondas since 2004ish, lots of pros pretty much zero cons besides price if you go with fancy wheels. Rancher, foreman, and rincon are all machines I’ve run since the early 2000s. The added ground clearance is awesome in the woods, snow, mud. Handling doesn’t change, they tuck under the fenders nicely so it doesn’t look stupid.
Pics are 26s on 3 different Hondas I’ve had over the days that all get tires. I do like to keep stock tires around for throwing chains on just because. But I also have chains for the 26 inch itp tires on the rincon.

Where are you located? If you are just looking for back up , I have a couple sets of old tires in my barn. When I’m able I’ll check sizes

Wheel size will affect the machine, if your using it for pulling or pushing, Tight turns while plowing or pulling an implement with larger tires, will affect torque quite a bit. For just trail riding, it won’t affect much and will give more ground clearance. Depends on how you use it.

Loss of low end torque/acceleration and overall added stress to the transmission are the first things I’d be careful to avoid. You also are likely to feel it when turning at lower speeds and whatnot.

It’s not a black and white, right or wrong choice….just something to be aware of.

My biggest regret regarding ATVs was selling a Honda Foreman I had back around 2010 or so. I loved that thing and would buy another of the same (or similar Rancher) in a heartbeat if I found a good deal.

I do basically 0 trail riding and all farm work, 90 percent of the time I have a trailer hooked up or a plow. That or a strap around trees and pulling them after I cut them up, noticeably 0 torque changes, it’s a bullet proof Honda tranny, never a stutter in over 6k miles acceleration hasn’t changed. Going from a 24 to 26 I’d very dismal in changes. Now if you were going to a 30 or 31 then I’d say your points are valid. And again that’s on a rancher 350, 420, then the foreman 500 and 520 and the rincon 650. And the rincon is the least reliable of all of them. Going to a 26 is more beneficial then anything.
My machines are all for work and not so much for fun. Trail riding is for the bikes.
