ATV battery issue

The first battery I bought for my 4 wheeler was from Batteries Plus, it was a 12 V AGM standard ATV battery. Worked great for about 5-6 years using it occasionally and putting it on a Battery Tender Jr every once in awhile.

So, when it finally started getting weak I went back to get the same. This was last April. The guy talked me into a Duracell AGM and said it was a step up over the Batteries Plus brand.

Long story short it already started to seem weak at times but I would put it on the tender. Last night I left it outside for the first time since having this battery.

Well it was totally dead today so much so I am having trouble even getting it to hold a charge even though it last back in the warm shop.

I have the receipt and box and called the guy at Batteries Plus where I bought it. He tells me yes it’s under warranty but they’d have to test it to see if I’ve been properly charging it and/or if I left it outside and “froze” it. He told me even though it was meant for ATV and snowmobile use it should be plugged in or covered if left outdoors. ???

We proceeded to have a not-so-nice discussion… but anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this situation? Is he completely full of BS? Am I missing something?

I would tell him it didn’t freeze and it’s under warranty . It doesn’t pass the load test . Replace it . Or I’d get pretty damn upset . I bought that same battery today . 130 bucks for an atv battery is plenty … almost returned it for a lead acid .

The part about being plugged in or covered if left outside seems like BS to me. Snowmobiles in particular are designed for a cold start, aren’t they? ???

Like I said my previous AGM battery lasted for 5-6 years. Left it outside ice fishing overnight in sub zero temps and never had an issue.

Sounds like a load of crap to me lol

When you get a new battery, I’d throw a multimeter between the positive post and positive cable before you hook it up to check for any parasitic draw. Super easy to do and takes 10 seconds to check waytogo

(do it with the key off)

I’m still appalled . Froze it . Get the hell out of here . Ask him if all the cars on dealer lots right now are junk batteries .

Where in the warranty is it WRITTEN that it can’t be left outside, has to be covered, etc?

Sounds like Battery Boy is full of s#it.

What a load of crap. Ask him if you need to take it inside at night and cover it with a blanket. whistling

sounds like bs to me. I’d go in there ready to stand my ground. Just thinking out loud here – isn’t the battery covered by a plastic cover? Not that it should matter – this “policy” sounds like hogwash and the guy was just spit balling to save himself some work.

I have had trouble with my ATV starting in cold temps and I have run an AGM for a number of years. If there isnt a trickle charger on it, forget it. It will not start, will not even crank. Now I leave it plugged in, but I do NOT use it very often heck, the only time I moved it in the last year was to put it under the deck for winter storage. That is a lot of my problem I am sure, but I just dont have a need to use it so it sits.
These things will sit for days, weeks unlike a car so IMO you should leave a trickle charger on it. Could it have froze? I highly doubt it, its an AGM. If it were a lead acid I would about guarantee it froze and its easy to see by a bulge on the side.

Same here… my ATV has a lead acid, parks outside or in a cold shed. Always plug in the trickle charger or forget it. When I take it out ice fishing, I always had my 12V Group 29 Deep cycle for powering lights etc… I made a small jumper harnass, that I could use when my ATV battery would not crank it over enough. Batteries are getting a reality check with these temps of late !

I keep the battery for my snow plow quad (2006 AC 500) in the cabin and top it off occasionally. Otherwise just sitting there unused in the winter elements, more often than not, kill it.
