I put some masking tape on my split grip handle and than attached the real to it with electrical tape. I used the masking tape first because I didnt want the electrical tape gumming up the cork handle if i decide to change reals down the road.

Whether or not it worked, it would just always make me slightly queasy using that rod. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always avoided anything to do with…

Get the castration tool. Works like a well… ahhh charm?
Pop a band on and away you go. That sounded wrong but a strange topic none the less.

I have been using the same bands ever since the craze started and I Have always soaked mine in HOT water prior to putting on,there has been times where I could roll them right on by using my thumbs using that method ..

when you do this,do the rods lay around all hunched over like for a day or two??
and I mean without a fish on them!!

we used this method on sheep and calves on the farm where I grew up,as uncomfortable as that looked,it certainly seemed better than what we used to do to the hogs with a scalpel!!

trumar, you got it,you are supposed to soak them in hot water.

Cold snap uses an end cut off a funnel. Go buy a $2 funnel and cut it off where it is bigger than the grip. Roll them up the funnel and on to the grip.

Any bait shop that does oxygen bags should have the tool. I would suspect if ya buy some bait there they would be happy to put 4 bands on a rod for you or maybe charge a buck at best. The bands are pretty cheap.

You all are way overcomplicating this! I would think (hope) you all have zip strips in your garage, tool box?
    Done in 60 seconds… applause

Get a cheap bander I never knew I would be using mine for fishing ten years ago when we started raising sheep but it works great for the bands

I can get the bands onto my charlie browns easy enough, but transferring it from there to the rod is always a bit tricky. Normally have to call for help, would the bander help move from my boys to the rod?

I use the cold snap tool to get the bands on the butt end first, then roll them to the rod blank spit area. They’re not to bad if you use your fingers to stretch and slide them on the handle. Works for me anyways.

I have bands on two of my rods but recently bought some new rods, so I tried the Clam silicone tape designed for this purpose. So far I like it. I don’t know if it holds up over time but I will use it this season and see how it does.

You can buy the same stuff cheaper at Menard’s. Self-sealing silicone tape is what to look for. No residue and can be removed if needed.

I have always used friction tape. It doesn’t have any adhesive on it and it only sticks to itself. After removing the reel at the end of the season, I don’t see anything left on the cork. One roll will last you a life time and only $3.

Electric tape, any sort of bands get annoying on the handle after awhile. Plus you get the bonus to color match your rod/reels if you feel so inclined.

I have been using the Duct and X-Treme brand tape for a couple years and I will tell you that it will get brittle after about a year. I have not had a reel come completely off, but I have had the tape begin to tear. My guess is Clam is using X-Treme brand tape with their name on it. Even with it getting brittle over time, it is the best solution I have found. I tossed my castration bands in the trash once I started using the tape! No residue and the tape doesn’t take any cork with it or leave marks.

IMHO this is by far the best way to go. If you are looking to buy some look on amazon. The technical term for this stuff is shelf adherent medical tape. It provides a rock solid connection for your reel to your rod and wraps very thin. It is very weatherproof, doesn’t freeze or feel cold on bare hands like electrical tape does. It also leaves no adhesive like previously stated and you can match your “cute” little rod colors )

i don’t like the feel of the bands. i can feel the reels moving ever so slightly. i use electrical tape first then atheletic tape 2nd. athletic tape is much warmer in cold weather.

X2 Plus the bands damage the cork. I run masking tape on the cork and then electrical tape. The friction tape sounds cool too, just no bands for this ice fishing nut… pun intended grin
