Saw your pics of these on FB. You seem to be getting pretty good at finding the big ones. Pretty cool. Never caught them, but from what I’ve read and seen, when they are biting it can get pretty wild.
They were fairly deep – 17 feet of water, suspended half way down or more in 50 degree water…

Sounds too good to be true! If it made that much sense to have a year round C&R season, of course they’d do it in Minnesota too.. ummm, er, wait a minute..
Prior is on Fire! Buddy caught a 4.01 pound white bass today
Funny – not to be a smart ass but we always thought those were trash fish, sort of like a carp or bullhead.

I’m ok with people not wanting to catch them… more for us that do. I’m an avid smallmouth guy, but these white bass pull even harder pound-for-pound. Absolute beasts. And excellent table fare, when I wouldn’t keep a smallie myself.
Do you have any idea you are seeing whites on your graph? and how?
Yes, this time of year they are in suspended wolf packs – 12 to 16 feet of water and about 1/3 of the way down. A lot of times 10-30 fish.
They move around surprisingly quickly this time of year for 50-54 degree water compared to other species (like crappies) that kind of “hover.” That’s the challenge is finding the white bass and casting to where they are swimming to next. Very aggressive, elusive, but fun when you connect.

I was on Prior yesterday catching crappies! Didn’t even think to try this! Totally forgot. You fishing vertical or casting for them? I’ve seen people do both.

Cutter 90 jerkbaits, suspended in the water column …
Been catching a fair amount of these on bladebaits on the mighty Mississippi

Well at least someone was catching crappies on prior. I had a terrible day on Saturday.

Hey Fryer you know the MN state record is only 4 pounds, 8 ounces right? That 4+ pounder is getting pretty close!

Good eye Gimruis – I wondered if anyone knew (or even cared) White bass are kind of the Rodney Dangerfield of the bass species, but IMO extremely underrated.
The funny thing is, my buddy that caught the fish is a great angler but doesn’t have confidence in tying a strong line-to-leader knot. Three minutes before he caught that fish, his leader knot broke… so I said “I’ll tie you a new one.”
We all know the FG knot takes awhile to tie, so I gave him my rod and he took my position on the front of the boat, and on the second cast while I’m twisting 20 alternating knots with the tag hanging out of my mouth, he sticks this behemoth!
I have caught some decent Whities before, but he caught an absolute slab! I should have taken a picture of it’s gut, definitely needs to enroll in an ab-cruncher program!!
If he would have caught the state record, I would have wanted a cut of the sponsorship royalties since he caught it on my rod
