Looks like the Ash River opened up today. Kabetogama is usually a couple of weeks later, so may make the opener yet.

I was up there Sunday and the rocks and falls were just breaking loose. Lots of warm water pouring into the system. I’m not surprised it went out. There were guys Crappie fishing that said there was 30″ of ice where they were fishing out on Kab.

Don’t give up hope for the opener just yet.

I was just trying to find the post from a year or two back on what the typical span was of ash river opening to main lake opening and couldn’t find it.

Looks like a two day soaker coming at the start of next week too, that will help.

According to the owners at Ash Trail lodge, the lake is ice free about 14 days after the river goes out. I plan on being there on May 14th.

Good luck to y`all who are planning on the 14th, I don’t know the lake at all but the reports are having me feel a little more optimistic in regards to ice out. We are heading up the following week (19th thru the 25th) , this will be our first trip to Kab, We are really excited for this trip.
When we booked the trip we never even considered Ice. Thanks for posting the reports on ice out!!! I can breath again.

I can relate to you there, our first trip was in 2013, picked the week starting may 18 that year, since that was the record latest date figured we were pretty safe. Talk about a nail biter that spring, finally coming off 3 days prior to our arrival. Fishing was HOT that year though, hoping to land on that again this year going for the opener week.

Thanks for the welcome! We booked a cabin at idle wild resort, there will be 6 of us with three boats. Picking a lodge is a lot like throwing darts, we talked to the owner Tim Snyder on the phone, seems like a really descent guy and he offered a ton of information. Pics on line looks good also, so far I have not seen any red flags with our decision picking idle wild.

Ya done good. Tim knows the lake well, he will steer you in the right direction. Get your maps , talk to Tim and follow them. You can get yourself into trouble up there just running around. I’m sure Tim will keep your group on Kab.

    Have fun!!

I stay at idlewild and will continue to do so every year. They are knowledgeable about the fishing too (both Tim and Wiley). Very good place to stay and good people. My daughter loves it for the swimming pool and play area. Good family resort and I highly recommend it.
