I have been following the ATA (Archery Trade Association) Show through a few feeds and with talking with some buddies who are down there, and there are a few products I thought were pretty cool!

Anybody else following along or have anything new for 2014?

Here are a few products I saw/heard about which really caught my eye and I can’t wait to put a few of them in my hands.

    Flying Arrow Archery Cyclone Broadhead

Flying Arrow first came out with the crazy broadhead called the toxic which was something unseen to the archery world. Instead of a cutting concept, they went with a coring concept.

New for this year they went with a more conservative approach called the cyclone and went with a 3 bladed spiral design with a 1″ cutting diameter on the 100 grain head and looks like it would create quite the spiral wound channel.

I personally didn’t shoot the toxic last year but spoke to a few people who did and they loved it. It provided the dependability of a fixed blade head and the wound channel of an expandable broadhead. I think I’ll either have a toxic or cyclone on for an early season doe mission. The blades are also interchangeable between the toxic and cyclone.

    Nockturnal Lighted Nock Helio

This essentially combines your lighted nock and vanes all into one. I am anxious to see the 6-vaned fletching nock combo fly to see if it is worth a darn. It weights in right around 55 grains. It is an odd looking product but like I say, I’m curious to see how it performs.

    Rage 3-Blade

This kind of made me roll my eyes a little bit. I have never been a fan of Rage 3 blade broadheads due to all of the horror stories. I know that when they work they REALLY work but there were just a few too many things going around.

I don’t think I’ll have the new 3-blade Rage with KORE technology in my quiver but I know there are a few Rage guys out there who might like something like this…..personally it looks like an accident waiting to happen with all of the moving parts….but that’s just me.

    PSE Full Throttle

370 FPS…….aaaaa wow? When I saw that I took a double take. That’s freakin’ fast! About 33″ axel to axel and where the speed comes from 5 1/4 in. brace height. This will be a bow to get into the hands and test to the shootability, because at 370 you would think there would be some sacrifices to this speed bow.

    ArborCon TreeOps 360

This is a hang on stand with a swivel arm and seat, which is out about 2 feet from the tree and you can use your arms an feet to swivel 360 degrees around the tree. There are a few times this year I so wish I had this product, the opportunity to shoot comfortably around the entire tree. This is a product I will be trying out as soon as it becomes available.

The new G5 broadhead is intriguing to me. I loved the T3’s but hated the spider clips. Couldn’t trust them in the field.

I hear you on hating the spider clips….I didn’t dare ever take a broadhead off my arrow. Do you know the scoop on the Dual Trap retention system? I am assuming it’s new for this year?

Just saw my first pic on FB today. Haven’t had time to dig into it. Hopefully Dennis D will see this post and fill us in more upon his return.

What issues were you guys having with the retention clips? I shoot the T3’s but have had no issues. I just want to keep an eye open for any potential problems.

I have no problems with them in terms of making the shot, opening on time etc. They have worked great for me, and have never had any “killing” problems.

The thing I don’t like about them is how cumbersome they are when taking them off, putting them on and how the blades can fall out of the clips. If I left them there and never took them off they would work great.

The other problem I ran into was purely my fault but I went on a trip and left the clips at home…I couldn’t find the spider clips for the life of me. 3 Fleet Farms, 2 Ganders, 2 Scheels and a Cabelas on my way out to Western NoDak and nobody had them! Ended up just buying a new pack of them.

Heck, I could never get the blades to stay locked into the clip. I had several heads that no matter how many clips I tried, one blade simply wouldn’t stay put.

I did kill a doe a few years back on a rather poor shot because my limb clipped my leg while shooting from a sitting position. The blade was flat out lethal.

The “core cutter” or “cookie cutter” broadheads are not a new concept…but they take a LOT of energy to achieve complete penetration…

They look wicked, but I cant see that those curved blades wont offer quite a bit of resistance going thru hide, gristle and bone.

I guess if a guy is shooting a high KE bow they may be devastating… But I am only shooting a 57#@30 bow and I normally get complete pass-throughs on Bear and Deer with my 125gr Slick Tricks with great blood trails…

Always something NEW! Have browsed a couple times to look at new stuff but heres what kinda popped to me:
    – Easton Bowfire Arrows, first I have seen of these arrows, (welcome to watching netflix). If they have some weight to them and good straightness, might be interesting, all white is easier to see than camo.
    – Helio fletching for lighted knocks could be pretty darn cool, just curious how the 6 vanes fly and what exactly happens when you would pass through?
    – THE TOM BOMB it looks crazy scary! if i draw a turkey tag you can bet the first couple days that will be on the end of the ol’ FMJ! Again, would be interesting to see something with such an aggressive blade idea actually flies straight enough to take a tom in the head. But it kinda tripped my ticker when i first seen it, and with the name TOM BOMB how could you go wrong?
    – NXT Generation Revolving bow, now why couldn’t they have come up with that like 15 years ago! I could have broken more things inside the house!

Thats about what caught my eye, will be paying attention to the Helios performance when they begin to get in the hands of more and more people, can’t ever get enough of seeing that beam zip through the sky, and something that throws a brighter bolt?!? I’m all in….

I also took a liking to the Tom Bomb, it looks like a cool design and if it would fly a little bit better I would be on board. I still just have a hang up with only taking head and neck shots, I would rather just bury it in the chest.

I have had a little experience with the Bullhead and in my experience, you might as well be shooting a nerf gun if you hit the body. I wonder if the Tom Bomb would do the same bouncing as the other heads? I would assume so.

I’ve always wanted to try a head shot with one of these broadheads. This new one looks cool. But like you Ben, I like to center punch the bird.

    What goes around?
Years, and I mean years ago, I think maybe it was Browning that had a ‘coring like’ broadhead out on the market. Safe to say it didn’t make it. But bows are ‘way’ better today then back then. They do look nasty
Looking to hear the details come this fall’s hunting season.
