Planning an “Out West” Trip for 2014!

As the 2013 season draws to a close shortly for many of us in the Great Lakes Area, I can’t help but think about next season.

Is anybody out there looking at new destinations to sink their teeth into for 2014?

I had the opportunity to bow hunt North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota this year and successfully harvesting mature Whitetails in Western ND and MN (Hopefully WI, still time!)

I am starting to look around at different destinations to pursue whitetails and Mulies for 2014. My western experience ends in at the North Dakota/Montana line. Ideally I would like to go OTC or have a draw with great odds. I have no problem going back country and getting down and dirty to seal the deal.

It would be nice to get an early jump on the season, late August or September and try to catch a big boy in Velvet. I really got the itch after seeing some great bucks in Western ND while they were still in velvet.

I have some connections in Colorado but would be open to really traveling anywhere.

Does anybody have an good experiences or suggestions they would like to do for 2014?

If you are going with an outfitter make sure you check out atleast 5 references and verify they aren’t all his buddies or relatives. For each state Outfitters are licensed, Montana is M.O.G.A (Montana Outfitters and Guides Association), call them and run the name of the outfitter or guide you are thinking of to get their opinion, you would be surprised at how honest they are and will steer you away from the bad ones. Sounds like you are looking at a D.I.Y hunt and that is the way I would go.

Planning on doing the same in 14′. I have hunted ND early the past couple years and went to nebraska for rifle for first time this year. I hunted just public land in both states, and lets just say i would love to spend less time hunting WI and MN public land. Except the EHD and the 10′-11′ winters reeeeally hurt the whitetails the further west you go, but the muley thing kinda got me going in nebraska
So if i have any “destinations” in mind for myself, it would be to pass on ND and head to Montana for early season (pretty sure their bow season was early also) and add in Colorado for muleys, will be going back to Nebraska without a doubt!

It would be 100% public land or whatever private land I could dig up. I would definitely go DIY.

I have spent a little time out in Montana doing some prescribed fire work and have stumbled across some great looking areas. I’m pretty dead set on a Muley trip, just experiencing something different!
