Rage 3 Blade Experiences

Just curious if anyone has had any experience with rage broadheads when they aren’t pass throughs. Particularly on a quartering away shot where it buries into the back shoulder with no exit wound but still hit’s the vitals. Much of a blood trail? Still see the quick kill I assume?

The quartering away shot you explained is why I just quit using them, my last three deer died this way without pass throughs. All three deer were found but with extended effort and almost no blood trail at all. Fully boated with blood in the cavity but extremely hard to find.

I shot a doe last fall in the exact scenario you described. She was 28 yards at point of impact. She went about another 75 tops when she tipped over. Lots of blood. Ray Charles could have tracked her. She did break my arrow as she ran off. Not sure if that helped in blood trail??

Sold my Rage 3 blades this year and went back to fixed blade. Shot 3 deer last year with the Rage 3 blade. All were complete pass thru. No blood. Exit hole was plugged with insides on all 3 deer. First deer had a fist size glob of guts plugging the hole with little to no blood…this was a quarter to shot which took out lung liver guts. The last deer was shot thru liver lung with the exit hole plugged with half the lung hanging out plugging the hole. I have never seen anything like that before. Again very little blood but was lucky I had snow on the ground to track her. My guess is that the heads punched thru the deer instead of slicing which caused the heads to pull the insides out.

Any sort of broadhead you shoot you will have lovers and haters. You can shoot 2 blade, 3 blade, muzzy, slick trick ect. and someone is always going to have a story to bash or say it does not work. It is pretty hard for me to believe a 2 inch cut with no exit will not bleed as much as a muzzy for example without pass through? I personally say shoot what you are confident in and go with it. I personally shoot the 2 blade and it has saved me more then once where I know with my old muzzys the blood would have been very minimal from past experiences. here is a picture of a quartering away shot at the point of impact Monday night where it snapped my arrow off. Looks like it was bleeding by then to me.

also for the record this is from a 2 blade not a 3 blade head.

Having worked in archery the past 5 years I have handled a lot of broadheads and shot most of what is on the market. I stay away form the 3 blade rages if you play with them you will see how the blades can bind on each other you will not have this problem with the 2 blade. I shoot the 2 blade rage for this reason and have shot 11 deer with it all of witch I have watched fall with in 35 yards but one that only went 70 yards with great blood trail my dad has also shot 5 deer with them and watched all but one fall. I have 100% confidence in the Rage 2 blade but would not put a 3 blade on the end of my arrows or any other broadhead for that matter. I have had guys come in to the store and tell me about problems they had with the 3 blade and other broadheads and ask me what I would recommend to them and I tell them the rage 2 blade and after I show them the reason behind it they walk out with a pack of 2 blades and on more than one occasion have had guys come in and thank me after they had great results with the 2 blade. Just my thoughts hope it is helpful

Great advice, I’m in the same boat with the 2-blades. Always have good penetration, and have only not had pass thrus on turkeys of all things!!!

Regarding pass thrus on opposite shoulders, you’re going to have a hard time blowing through that other shoulder no matter what you shoot. Sure, you might increase your odds somewhat if you’re talking about the edges of the shoulder, or the middle of it on a fawn, but you’re talking about a single instance amongst many types of high percentage shots on a whitetail. And you’re talking about one that’s nearly immediately fatal no matter which broadhead you’re using.

In shooting muzzy’s and thunderheads over the years, the only arrows that came out the other side on a shot like that, were arrows that would’ve come out with any head on it. I think a little bit of luck is involved with that type of shot to get a pass through, but keeping it low definitely helps. Hit high, and you bury on the backside of that shoulder blade everytime as it’s broader the higher you go.

I’m a supporter of people shooting what makes them confident, and it seems like broadheads unlike any other piece of equipment really brings out opinions and personal experience. I think that’s why we all state our experiences and make a decision from there. For me, when I’ve made a good shot (of any angle), I’ve consistently found more blood, and recovered deer, turkeys, and a bear at closer ranges than I did when I used fixed blades. Could be due to better equipment now than back then, could be due to more experience, better shot selection, who knows? Just another opinion amongst many.

I have switched from Muzzy’s to Grim Reapers to 3 blade Rage to 2 Blade. Great, Good, Moderate or Poor placement. It all really comes down to which broadhead is the most forgiving. I’m confident in my choice. Like whats been stated, what do “you” feel confident in. Don’t just success by the endorsor’s of said product. They are getting paid to say it’s the best. All equipment today will get the job done. If the shot is good….

A double lung hit on a deer is always fatal and they never go far. Doesn’t matter what broadhead you shoot. The deer that aren’t found every year are to me obviosly not hit as well as the person who shot it thought it was. I say shoot the broadhead that you are most acurate with and remember to stay within your limits and follow through with your shot.

Sounds like us archery hunters are getting lazy/greedy… if they don’t drop with-in sight, we look to our equipment ? I have never shot RAGE before, but hear lots of good things about the 2-Blade. FWIW, I shot a Buck in Montana, the quartering away.. I was pulling 70 lbs, 12 yards and the Steel Force Sabretooth buried in the opposite shoulder… he ran in a half circle and fell over in 30 yards… a well placed shot, has no substitute

I went to Rage 2 blades 4 seasons ago. I’ve never lost a deer and have had complete pass threw shots more than not inside 25 yards. (I do have some 3 blades, but those are for the coyotes, fox, r’coons, etc, that I see coming w/o any deer trailing them….)
This last weekend I dropped two yearlings, one went 35 years, and the other 35 feet! 4 seasons ago a 10 pointer went maybe a 100 yards…as mentioned above, double lung = dead deer…..shot angle, shot placement are critical.
With other style blades I was using, I hated reaching into the body cavity not knowing where the hell a broadhead was or even a piece of it. I don’t have that problem now…

I love mine, shot bear and deer with them, lots of blood, the bear bled like a stuck pig 2 feet away from where i shot him, ran 65 yards. I’ll use them until i have a problem
