Making the move from 100gr to 125gr

  • #197145

    Hey Everyone,

Thinking really hard about making the move from 100gr fixed broadheads to 125gr fixed heads, in an effort to utilize a larger diameter fixed head.

Anyone have any downsides to this move they can share with me?

All my shots will be less than 30 yards due to thick cover so i’m not concerned about the long range downside to these heads, just the short range capabilities.

    Thanks!

    Thanks John.

I’m looking at the 125gr Striker Magnums by G5. They have 1.5″ diameter vs the 1 1/8″ diameter of the standard 100gr heads that i’m currently shooting. I’m thinking the decrease in long range yardage would be worth the 3/8″ increase in head diameter.

I have a good friend that used to shoot strikers and wanted to do the same thing you are thinking about doing as soon as he started to shoot the 125gr Striker Magnums he noticed a big differance in flight the strikers fly way better then the Striker Magnums he had problems with fliers and it was not a tuning problem

100 grain grizz trick 2’s. 1 and a quarter inch four blades. They make a big mess and fly like darts

I will second anything slick trick related. I shoot the standard 1″ slick trick, without fail. The 1 1/8″ Magnum might be worth a look in your case, and I cannot imagine needing “much more” than that. Another head that is overlooked, but makes a neat hole, is the NAP Razorback in 100/125. These are the heads that I use, and mix and match freely with 100/125. If I choose to shoot 125, then I practice at 125 with a field point

20 grains is nearly insignificant as far as speed goes…which means little since it is accomodated in the sight adjustment. 99% of the bow set ups out there are too light in the front end to have good FOC %. FOC can be described as the “balance” point of the arrow, which greatly improves the fletchings ability to control the arrow flight I would like to know the specifics of your draw weight and arrow length/spine. Then I can help you decide.
After surgery I am currently pulling [email protected]″. I shoot a
442gr arrow at 235fps with 54.21 lbs of KE and 125gr Slick Trick Mags. The G5 Strikers are excellent heads and some of the sharpest out of the box one can buy…

Thanks for all the great responses guys. After going back and forth with this decision, it felt it was best to try to get my confidence up in the expandables one last time and see how that goes.

I had a doe pass by my stand at 6yds on Saturday evening and needless to say the 100 grain Rage 3-blade has me thinking I might have gained the confidence I need to keep these in my quiver for a while!

Nice shot on that doe Justin!
I’ve used nothing but 2&3 blade Rage heads in 100gr…Love those big holes they make…

Did you get an exit hole picture?

    #111102

The exit hole looked about the same but unfotunately I didnt get a picture of that.

The shot was at a tough angle so I had to bring the arrow in high as you can see. Exit hole was just on the lower part of the vitals.

Arrow carried enough energy for a complete pass through and buried my arrow in the dirt up to the nock. That doe never knew what hit her, as she took two bound and piled up.
