I want to start bow hunting. I am planning to use it for turkeys/big game. At this point in my life it is the last thing I will do based on time available. Having said that, what should I look for and what options do I need? I DO NOT want to break the bank. I want a reliable piece of equipment that I can use until I have a need or more time to invest in this. If someone can tell me not only a make/model but why that item would be for me would be great. I guess I should tell you I am interested in archery cus its looks a lot harder and more rewarding. thanks

I can tell you after many many years in this business that you should, if at all possible, get to a reputable archery shop and talk to the owner operator.
As a beginner, there are a LOT of things to learn/understand about archery first… fitting you with a bow that meets your financial budget, that will allow you to learn how to shoot properly and accurately. Also fit that bow with the compatible accessories you need to eventually hunt. You will need to devote some serious practice to shoot well enough to make a clean kill on a Turkey.
You will need to develope your particular form etc… I could go on for a long time but to make it short…get to a good Pro Shop…do NOT go to Fleet Farm etc…

Where are you located? If you’re in the metro I can probably get you out to our club and you can try a lot of different bows. Otherwise go to a shop and try a few out.

definitely like everyone has said but if you are in the metro go to schaffers, they have everything you could think of and will do what ever they can to get you a bow that you like you will be happy that you went there

Quite honestly, you can go the route Tom suggests… or pick up the first one you find at a garage sale for $50 and see if it sticks with you. Frankly it doesn’t sound like your real serious about it…. shooting a bow and actually hunting with it are 2 totally different things. If it is the last thing on your mind, you might want to skip the archery shop and maybe borrow somebodys old one or pick up an older bow and give it a try. Just being honest… hunting with a bow, is not for the faint of heart or something to be taken as a hobby. I would hate to see anyone spend hundreds of dollars on something they won’t even use.

Thanks for your help. I have a buddy who has a five year old Mathews Switchback XT. He brought it into a pro shop owned by a friend of a friend who is a Mathews dealer. It fit me and I picked it up for $500. Its like brand new. Thanks for the input.

You’ll love that bow. I just sold mine for a new one. Already wish I’d kept it but I’m grabbing another new bow in october after the wedding

Will be staying in North Sioux City and hunting 20-25 minutes west. First time to the area. also might go north to SD as well. Just across the border as I’m told. So psyched 15 days to wait

So I picked up the new toy yesterday. Holy smokes my arms are tired from shooting so much. What a blast, can hardly wait to get a critter in front of me. How come nobody told me about this years ago

Congrats and Welcome to Archery Hunting!

It is very addicting to say the least. I haven’t put mine down since last deer season! Getting ready for turkey hunting! But I enjoy the target shooting anyway…I’m usually in the basement shooting at the least every other day.

Had a case of the yips today, threw my first arrow. Hopefully the wife doesn’t notice the fence

I “Threw” one in the basement last year! That knock really comes back in a hurry after hitting the brick wall!

I hunt right down in that area. Lots of birds.
