One of the questions on the 2010 Hunting Regulations Online Survey is should a person 55 years of age or older be allowed to hunt with a crossbow during the archery deer season? So what do you think? I am all for it I am only 4 deer seasons away from 55.

My feeling is, when someone hits 55, if pulling the bow becomes too much, they should be able to use a crossbow, so they can enjoy the sport for more years. In my opinion, any bowhunter will use their bow as long as they can. It just gives an option to some hunters who might otherwise hang up the bow and use the gun. Can’t any disabled hunter get a crossbow permit anyways ??? I would think at 55, you could get a doctor to write the crossbow prescription

I’m not really familiar with todays crossbows. Is there any advantage to them? Are they as lethal? As acurate? Shoot
    farther?

Are they as good as a bow I say heck no but they are very lethal . My dad has used one for about 8 yrs now . He had both his shoulders worked on and could not pull a bow back anymore so they gave him a permit to use one . I give him hell every year for using a crossbow but I guess I wouldn’t have it any other way , He is 67 and still hunting hard with us and that’s all that matters

Right on Gman! I think in WI you have to be disabled in order to hunt with a cross bow but I’m not 100% sure.

    From the WI regs.

    • Crossbows are only allowed for resident hunters 65 years of age or older and
any disabled hunters with a Class A, C, B Crossbow, or crossbow permit. The
crossbow must have a minimum draw of 100 pounds, a working safety, and use at
least 14-inch long bolts or arrows equipped with broadheads (requires an Archery
    License).

I’m 64 and fortunately my shoulders still allow me to use a vertical(thats the term now a days) bow. I don’t shoot the heavy poundage anymore…63#@29 will kill most any critter I want to hunt with good shot placement.
As G man said…it keeps older and/or physically impaired guys still out there hunting.
Todays crossbows are extremely accurate and powerful. Here in Mich you only need to be 50yrs to hunt with a crossbow.
They have their demands though…that string needs to be cocked w/o any twist or horizontal variation or the arrow will be off target. FOC (front of center%) is critical for good consistent flight with the short(typically 20″ bolts).

I have set up and sold several crossbows…My favorite is the Excalibur. Some top bow makers are already producing crossbows…Parker, PSE, to name a couple. I would be glad to help anyone out there that has questions. Just send a PM.

I don’t care,, use em’ if you want to.. BUT, all crossbow users need to (like an air guitar) do a fake pull back motion to make it fair for the deer. If you can get away with that and not get busted, now you get to pull the trigger!

    ps. i’m kinda serious.
