Too cold for Bowhunting?

Being fairly new to bowhunting, I was wondering if it ever gets too cold to bowhunt, speaking in terms of bow performance. I was thinking about doing some late season bow trimming tomorrow, but it’s supposed to be close to zero degrees and I don’t want anything breaking over a doe or two.

I would say NO it is never too cold to bow hunt. I have hunted in -22 below straight temps (not windshield). The deer are forced to move in this stuff. I suggest getting all dressed up like you were if you were going to sit in a stand and practice shooting with all those clothes on. It does change how you shoot with all those layers on, not to mention thicker gloves, facemask etc. The biggest problem people have is they practice all Summer with a t-shirt on and no gloves or facemask. Then the time come sin the Winter with all these clothes on, gloves and face mask, they draw back and it feels real funky when you try to find your anchor point.

I still draw back every time I go out just so I can get accustomed to the “different’ feeling.

Will the cold effect the performance of your bow??? Probably to some degree, but never enough where you should not hunt!

I have killed 4 deer at or near below zero temps with opps at many more. This bad boy in my avatar was one of them!

It would be warmer with the windshield factored in right????

Late season has given me some of my best memories ever bowhunting!

My first buck with the bow – 10 below on New Years Eve Glidden WI

A dandy 10 with the bow after X-mas actual temp -30 below Glidden WI

There’s just something about being in the big woods and the edges of green swamps with deep snow and frigid temps this can turn the big country into funnels and pinch points with all the deer using the same trails to conserve energy. Dress warm and smart – practice with your bulk to eliminate a bad shot after putting in your time and get ready for a good time

I will have a topo map printed and zoomed in to the actual spot that I will be in – truck and stand location with my walking route this is left at home so if I don’t call to check in by 7:00 pm my sweetie is able to give the info to the right folks that will be looking for me if something goes wrong in this type of weather.

I have been in the Glidden area Jeff…it is an awesome piece of unique topography. I have never hunted there, but know it is the Bear capital of Wisconsin!

I have hunted several times in in 20-30 below and have seen some great bucks then. Wish I could say I got one of those…

I’ve had some great days bowhunting the late season. Bring along plenty of heater packs to increase your comfort level and time on stand. With the snow it is a truly amazing and unique experience when you see a deer moving through the landscape. Stick to the food sources and trails to them.
Besides, that’s like asking is it too hot to golf!!

Another thing to remember is if you keep your body core warm your hands and etc. have a lot easier time of staying warm and keepoing your hands and feet warm. If you have ever worn one of those Sno Suits for Ice Fishing you know what I mean. I often on real cold days (below zero) will throw a heat pack or two inside my clothes on my midsection area to generate some additional heat.

Jeff, has a great reminder that we all should do every time we head to the stand but definitely in frigid temps, where in a matter of seconds bad things can happen.
