Holding at full draw

A post by Jeff Heeg in another thread brought up a good point about being able to smoothly draw and let down your bow while game is in close. I didn’t want to jack the thread so I figured that I would just throw this up here as it may just help someone bag their next buck.

What do you do when a deer holds up and you are at full draw? If you are pulling light poundage you can probably manage to hold long enough for the deer to clear any obstruction and offer the shot. Sometimes the animal is really going to make you work for it though and this can lead to a shaky shot at best when your shoulder muscles are on fire. Something that I practice, and that has helped me kill deer is to drop my release arm elbow to my side. It takes very little movement in comparison to letting the bow down and it puts your arm in a position where it is possible to hold the bow at full draw for as long as it takes. Try it next time you’re shootiing at the range, draw and hold and as you are fatigueing drop your elbow to your side. The burn goes away and when that deer decides to take it’s next step you don’t have to re-draw, just raise your elbow and find your anchor.

I’m no expert but it’s something that I picked up along the way and in a pinch it can turn a botched encounter into a successful one.

Shed I have done the same thing many times as well and works great…the only thing is to make sure you line your body, anchor point, stance, etc.. back up straight…at least for me if I drop my elbow away for a while it seems I dont line my shot up as well with anchor point etc…when I bring my elbow back up…also hitting the gym helps hold that bow back …great thread and tip though…jay

Thanks for that tip> My shoulder is all messed up as it is and this is certainly going to get a try from me the next time this situation comes around.

Yes, I have done this and it does work.

I wouldn’t say it is no effort but you can hold A LOT longer doing what Shed said!
