I don’t know if you can get a boat in yet but I’ve heard there are some fish being caught.

Wade’s not too far from there maybe he has heard something.

Have you ever fished Milford Lake. I drove over the dam last weekend and it appears the lake was about 80% or more open. I will be back down there next weekend and will see what has changed.

It won’t be long and we will have some open water around here.

I have not fished Milford yet. It is quite a ways from me. I heard that Wilson is open and it sounds like Cedar Bluffs is real close

The plan is to fish with Wade up there, i’m just fishing for some early info

My uncle was up there below the damn about 2 weeks ago. They had a 3 man limit in about 2 hours. Nice fish too, all 3 to 5lbs. Don’t know about the conditions after this cold snap, but if you can get a boat in should be really good.

So does anybody know if a guy can get a bigger boat on the water?

I have never had problems in the past. It really isn’t all that difficult with winter river levels, even with a bunk trailer. Just have two there, one to hold the rope, one to back er down. I don’t know if there is a large difference this year in river levels compared to previous years. Was there last year, not there this year…yet.

Biggest problem I ever had right below the dam with winter fishing wasn’t enought open water. Depending on the weather I’ve caught fish there from January on. Long as the day is warm enough to keep the ramp from ice’n up I’m ok. Gets a little too cold and I’ve seen some rigs slid right back down the ramp……

Do they keep a barrel of gravel at the ramp or should a guy bring a bucket of his own?

And I have never gone out in conditions like this. I usually hit those odd 45-60 degree days…during a winter that was much warmer.

Ben, it probably wouldn’t hurt to bring some of your own. It is usually peppered pretty good with sand and gravel, but again, I have never gone in frigid weather. That is a steep, steep, steeeeeeeep ramp.

    Zach,
Last weekend there were reports of some 9’s being caught as well. I’ve heard both ways. That it is really going and that it’s sporactic. That ramp as already mentioned is very steep. Be careful.

the ramp is steep but once at the water level it flattens out to about level and is gravel and rock under the water. i get in and out quite often with no problem. just walk down first and see which side of the ramp is best that day and don’t drop your rear pickup wheels off the concrete part of the ramp. sd side works also.

I was not trying to be like that. I was trying to let people know that this will not be my first time up there but it will be my first time this year.

Zach, I’ve been to Yankton several times this winter and have not seen the river frozen. I think you will be fine. The weather up here is supposed to be in the lower 30’s for a while. And from what I’ve been told the fish are going fairly well.

Zach, I think it should be okay from here on out. I know some guys who get some pretty big boats in there, even at fairly low water. If need be, I’d be willing to run up there ahead of time and check it out before you make the trip. Anything in the 30s for temps and I’m ready to go! Just holler!

    Zach,

I know of a couple guys that are going to be up there at the end of next week. If we cannot get the fish going there we are going to start heading North and hit below Pickstown, Big Bend and possibly below Pierre. I have heard the big ones are moving in and are biting, but it is day to day. You should have no problem getting your boat in and out of the water.

    Western Nebraska Record Buck?

I got this sent to me early last week. In the Panhandle of Nebraska are the ‘Wildcat Hills’ and this beauty gave one fella a trophy few of us will ever see much less get the chance to put theon. Here’s what I learned about it. I used to live out there and still have good connections.

    332 gross non-typical

    41 points

    43″ inside spread

    35″ beams

    7.5″ base

Even after the 60 day wait, this will be the New Nebraska State record, Archery or firearm. It was arrowed by Eric Mathson.

If I get anything more I’ll stick it on here.

    43″ inside spread?

Is this the same Eric Mathison, who reps sporting goods, in Wisconsin?

I just have to ask… this has always lead me to be leary about bucks of this caliber & the stories…. why are they always in the back of an old pick-up for the picture ??? Wouldn’t you have about 1000 photos of you WITH your deer, in a more natural setting ??? Maybe it is just me but the last thing I would do, is start emailing people pictures of a monster like that, even laying in the back of one of the brand new trucks I drive.. Either way, it’s a big un… I don’t see 41 points though.. I count 30 max… Still, I would probably take this deer out
