I am going to have few questions for some of the deer hunters here. My wife has just taken up archery and tonight had a good opportunity at a doe. She is a great shot for not shooting since highschool and has proved that she can put together good groups out to 30 yrds. Originally she just wanted to be able to shoot with my son and I for fun, but now she has put a lot of effort into trying deer hunting. The deer have been feeding out in the Alfalfa and I put the blind out between the trails they are using to enter the field. The main problem is I don’t deer hunt, and my knowlege on it is very limited.

The question is with the bow she has, is she going to get a pass through, or is it going to be hanging out of the side of the deer. She bought the new Mission Menace pulling 40-45 lbs and is shooting 100 gran Muzzy MX-4’s. Tonight she missed clean but it was really hard to find the arrow out in the field. She thinks she ranged it wrong and shot low. Our little guy was with her and said she flinched but thats what he always says when he misses a shot.

Shooting that weight I don’t think she will have a problem with penetration. Go out and buy her some illuminated knocks. That will help all of you track the arrow through the air.

My daughter pulls 44 pounds on her Diamond Edge Bow and has no problems with penetration and pass thru’s. She shoots Carbon Express CX-200 arrows tipped with 75 grain 3 blade Muzzies. I also installed Easton Tracer nocks for her this year and she loves being able to see exactly where the arrow impacts the target/deer.

At that weight she could get a pass through if the arrow doesn’t hit solid bone. It still may go through but it depends on how close of a shot she makes.

Yep, penetration should not be a problem especially with a new bow. My wife shoots a DXT @ 48 lbs and has a Carbon Express Arrow @6.3 grain/inch, with a Rage 40 KE broad head, the Tracer nock and she is 1 for 1 for complete broad head pass through. Her total arrow weight is 311.5 grains and she is getting around 30 ft lbs of KE.

So was the wife excited when she missed?

Rob I think she was pretty dissapointed that she didn’t tip it over, but she doesn’t seem discouraged. The boy said that she used a bad word after she shot and the doe ran.

Hopefully she sticks with it! I sure wouldn’t mind a freezer full of venison.

I did think of luminated nocks about 500 times when we were searching for the arrow. Guess I’ll be getting her a set for our anniversary!

Tell her not to get discouraged….. I am guessing quite a few of us Archery Deer Hunters on here, have a story or two about misses, especially when just starting out…. I know I have a few Tell her to stick with it and it will happen and when it does, it makes it all worth it

Yeah, I can relate. When my wife missed he Coyote this year a bad word was thrown in the air also.

Good to hear she got excited about it. Like Big G said, tell her to keep at it. I missed my first deer and did not recover my second due to my arrow getting deflected by a branch. Her time will come.

Keep us posted on how things go.
