The woods I have been hunting the last few years there has been a lot of young bucks in. In the middle of the woods along the river there is an opening where there is just weeds. Its right along the river and by 50 acres of CRP land. I know the land owner really well and he said I could plant either some corn or some kind of food plot there next year if I wanted. What does everyone think I sould do with this area. Plant some corn or food plot or both. Its about Its about 60 yards by 30 yards. And what kind of stuff should i plant if i do a food plot?? What does everyone think??

i’d do part corn, part clover, part turnups!

deer would be all over that like a duck on a junebug.

I would think any and all of the above would work well!

I’m no expert here, and plan to do this myself on our land. Corn seems like there isn’t much of a benefit unless it is cut. Rape and turnip from what I am seeing is a high sugar leaf that really hauls them in late. PM Corey Waller, they have had really good luck with food plots.

My dad planted some BuckCock this past year after I was turned on to it by Scott Steil. This stuff was great for all game. I guess their are several neighbors of his planting it now.

It depends it sounds like your intent is just a plot to hunt over and not feed the deer with. For thos plots I like to plant stuff that they do not have on their normal daily diet (corn, beans, etc). Things like Turnips, Rape, Barrasica, and Clover are good choices always. I tend to plant a mixture as each one has their time of year where they are the “Preffered Food”. Plant as much as you can because it will get down to nothing fast.

I can not find it on the Inet for some reason. Had a hard time when I was looking for it before. However, you can call the South Dakota Wheat Growers office in Redfield, SD and they will provide you with info. 605-472-0300.

No problem! Just thought i’d research it if it were on the net. I will be planting a few plots in the spring as well.
