Last week my fiance’ and I were following a blood trail from a buck she shot and it led us into a ravine. When we got to the bottom of it we found a rock wall at the upper end with a few small caves in it. We noticed what looked like a dead rabbit laying at the entrance of one of the caves. I went in for a closer look and a cougar let out a roar! We didn’t see it but needless to say we didn’t stick around very long. I’ve heard of cougar sightings in the area over the past couple of years but this was my first experience. Has anyone else out there seen or heard cougars in the area? I’m 47 years old and never knew they were around here until last year.

I have never seen one and I hope I don’t get as close to one as you did!
I have really close to a bobcat once when I was hunting grouse and that scared the out of me. He was after the same covey as me.
November 13, 2008 at 2:59 pm #42929Does anyone know the law on cougar killing in WI. I recently saw something on MN, but just making sure that it’s not ok to down one unless it starts to eat me.

If ya shoot’em in the neck you’ll be fine.
November 13, 2008 at 4:38 pm #42944We followed the blood trail until we ran out of blood. No luck! She figured she got the shoulder blade ’cause the string hit her sleeve. Needless to say she is now wearing an armguard over her sleeve… Maybe the cougar found it!
November 13, 2008 at 4:39 pm #42945I’m tired of sleeping must be getting close to ice fishing season…
November 13, 2008 at 6:52 pm #42969Kevin, you need to go back to that cave and put up a game camera and get some pics. Maybe it was a bob, bear, or omething else. Then once you got the pics get it to the new, then DNR. Either that or shoot it than do the same thing. There is no law on the books in WI. At least from what I have read, and been told. They don’t even list them as protected. If they did, then they are admitting we have them. Then a management plan will need to be put in place.
I personally cannot wait to come across one. Then we are going to have some fun!!
November 13, 2008 at 6:56 pm #42970I’m going to move my blind today which is right above where the cougar is. I’ll take my camera along and see if I can get some pics. Will be packing my handgun as well!
November 13, 2008 at 6:58 pm #42971Also, a cougar makes a distinct sound. Not that I’ve heard it in person but from the ones I’ve seen and heard on t.v. this was definately a cougar…

That would have scared the $!!# out of me!!!!!!November 14, 2008 at 1:52 pm #43001You really want to have some fun, take a predator call along and see if you can coax him/her out of the cave. Just be aware you are now “dinner”.

It doesn’t hurt to dab a little T-Bone behind the ears either
November 15, 2008 at 12:40 pm #43055When I lived in Texas, I deer hunted down there and ran into one 3 different times. We never saw it, only heard it. It is still my most “scariest” moment alive today.
If you listen to this Youtube video, this is what we heard.
Mountain lion scream
The first time I heard it, I actually thought there was a woman in trouble. It was the weirdest, creepiest sound I’ve ever heard. I got out of there (scared to death), not knowing what the heck was making the sound, until a buddy quized me. I always expected to hear the “roar”, which we never did. This cat was smart. We never saw her, but she was always around. Even took down a doe on our property.
But after about a month, she was gone. She did have 2 kittens, by looking at the tracks. And her feet were fricken HUGE! You’ll know if you have one in your area. Their feet are about 4-5 inches WIDE!

Kevin did you ever get any pics of the cougar?
March 3, 2009 at 5:41 am #48129I’ve been trying to talk a couple of people into coming along with me so I can place my camera while they stand guard with a gun. Maybe tomorrow? They’re pretty chicken!
March 15, 2009 at 10:17 am #48651We found these tracks a few days ago. Not sure if they are kitty tracks or not. We don’t know what else they would be.
