He was not found guilty of intentional homicide (1st or 2nd degree) which were the most severe charges. He was found guilty of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide though…which carries up to a 60 year sentence.

I highly doubt he is sentenced to that max or will serve the entire span in prison. Regardless, he is going to sit for a long time.

I agree, being that he has no history of being a criminal. I would say he is sentenced to half that. Still a long time to think about what you’ve done.

Absolutely. 54 years old, say a 30 year sentence with 15 years spent in prison and then the extended supervision…his life may not be over, but it’s never going to be normal again.

I wish more people who recreate and mix booze, pot, or even just anger knew the ins and outs of this case (not just young people). I regularly see people of all ages on the river arguing about fishing too close, parking too tight on sandbars on busy weekends, shouting stupid insults at one-another if they feel cut off in the channel…and all it takes is one person who takes it the wrong way or is carrying something to change everyone’s lives for the worse regardless of intentions.

When someone does something “dumb” nowadays, I generally just make eye contact and deliberately shake my head at them letting them know their stupidity, and then leave/move on. There’s no point in yelling or attempting to educate them.

Pretty certain bucky is saying all those ingredients makes some people do stupid stuff.

I’m about the same way. Just roll my eyes and move on. Never know what is going to happen. coffee

    Well said Bucky!!

I’ve also seen it all on the St. Croix and I dont even drink when im out driving the boat and when im not driving I dont like to get after it from what all I’ve seen.

I’ve been out on the Apple river and yes it can be fun but I have no desire to ever go back. Lots of dumb drunks of all ages. I think this guy should get some jail time but I also feel like he was in a terrible situation and it all was handled poorly by all parties.

Its true. I’ve watched the educational video “Reefer Madness”. There’s been studies. Some sucker has a bag of Doritos and bam a pothead offs ’em and steals there snacks and then goes to their house and diddles their mom. It is kinda weird how nobody except the doctor could remember anything, and she had notes.

People that smoke weed are true of two things. 1. they assume the vast majority of people also smoke weed. 2. Weed cures anything and everything. Example: I just cut off my thumb. I have a fix for that, come over here and take a giant hit off my bong, and rub some dirt on it. grin

Tussin and dirt fixes everything not weed. Weed just makes you forget you cut off your thumb. See just take a look at my thumb.

Three take aways from the prospective of old (er) guy.

    1. No need for a knife at a fist fight, If he needed to stab anyone, he should have been trying to run away at the time.

    2. Always listen to that voice in your head. He didn’t hear his.

    3. Fu*k up and do something stupid. Don’t talk to anyone. You have the right to remain silent.

Mojogunter nailed it……..I know quite a few people who despise drinking and driving yet will smoke weed and drive. The saying is I never seen weed kill anyone.
    I 100% disagree.

    spot on Jon

I was surprised he took the stand because he didn’t say one word in the video. I feel bad for the guy because it is probably the first fight he has ever been in?
Its one thing to claim self defense but to go slashing at 5 people including a couple gals for running their dumb mouth?
I don’t think he deserves to be punished for decades. seems like a good guy who didn’t handle a small disagreement.

Maybe it is time for the Stand Your Ground law in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

I agree, I also think that lie upon lie in the interrogation video plus his testimony on the stand hurt his cause. He would have likely faired better had he remained silent in both of those situations.

So after all the videos can his family or someone press charges against the group of younger people for assult or something. Sure seems they had a role in all this.

They should. Afterall, the guy didn’t go looking for a fight. The drunks brought it on. That’s dangerous behavior and it should be addressed. If not, they’ll likely do it again.

My parents just got back to MN from a long vacation in the SW. On the way to carlsbad caverns (AZ) they stopped in a small rural town for a cone at McDonalds. My sister had warned them not to stop at small towns in this area of the country because they are dangerous(high statistics of violent crime). My mom pulls out of the McDonalds in her words “driving like a turtle.” There’s a guy in his 20s walking down the street with a backpack, he suddenly turns and advances on the car, punching the windshield and completely smashed it and stove it in. Then he turns and walks away (thankfully). My dad calmly told my mom to turn off the street and they got out of dodge. They didn’t report to police as likely nothing would have been done, and they just wanted out of there. Multiple people who saw the windshield said, “guy must have broke his hand!” It’s a good guess brass knuckles or some object was in his fist. Lots of drug use, poverty, and violence down that way. I’ll try and get a pic of the windshield to post later today.

Here’s the pictures. Scary situation for a couple senior citizens on vacation. My sister lives in Albuquerque. Lots of wild stories from down there. Often a sad state of affairs.

Looked to me that those kids did stand their ground. It was the stabber that came up to them.

If you are being serious – then maybe you need to read a Stand Your Ground Law.

I see Nicolae Miu got sentenced to 20 years in prison. I believe he has to serve the whole 20 years – time already spent. This was FAR less than the victim’s family had asked for. I sure it was FAR more than Mr. Miu thinks he deserved. I’m a little mixed on this one. I think the kids actions, Alcohol, and drug use played a roll in this situation. How much I’m not sure. Could Mr. Miu avoided the situation, also not sure. Bad deal all the way around.

The jury did not like that he was sneaky after the act.
