Sounds like it’s all on camera so we will see.
The few times I did the apple river when I was younger I seen many drunk ego fights. Sounds like he was pushed multiple times or something before taking a knife out. But who knows.

the report i seen on the #4 news last night said it was a fight over a cell phone. apparently he hit a woman also.

and one of his conditions if he comes up with a million bucks to get out was he remain sober……. so yea booze was involved!!!!

i understand he had no previous convictions and was a well respected engineer with a family.

Apparently he brought it to cut ropes that they used to attach tubes. That’s what the story claims anyways.

Sad deal for sure. Alcohol never mixes well. I read a more detailed account of the situation and it certainly sounded as though he felt threatened but seemed to have ample opportunity to leave the area. He claims he was hit first while others claim he threw the first punch as is always the case. There apparently is video footage, but I have not seen it.

Who doesn’t bring a knife with them everywhere? Apparently some of you.
Big deal. He had a knife. Its his actions that are the problem.

Ridiculous headlines as always which only lights fires by our media.

For all we know the man could’ve been in self defense swinging his arm around in the air fending off a group, swiped a couple, and tragically got one deep and killed em.

We’ve had dozens of threads on here about knives, almost everyone carries one, absolutely no surprise someone had one on a float trip, would be very handy.

Floated the zumbro myself this past weekend, heard of it on the way back and just another reminder to just walk away. Truly sorry for the loss of life, tragic.

There was a time that floating the Apple River was a fun Family outing. That time was long ago. I would not float that river with young kids these days. The last time I was on the Apple River there was about much nudity as you would see on a Girls gone wild video. No shortage of Drunks throwing up all over the place as well. NO THANKS !!!! I’ll leave that place to the young ” Look at me I’m having my first drink crowd ” Sad to hear that someone lost their life and other were injured on something like this.

Our cabin is by another Wis tubing place on the Namekagon River. Its a nice operation and I dont hear bad things but we steer clear of that stretch of water all summer.

What a weird story. Heard it on the news and expect it to be a teenager of young adult. Sad.

There have always been fights floating the apple river. Lots of people have gotten their asses kicked. Never hear of someone getting stabbed much less 5 people. I would have chosen to get my ass kicked over branishing the knife and sticking anyone within striking distance. The guy is a dumb ass. Hope he rots in jail.

It’s so very hard to walk away from an heated altercation when sober, and nearly impossible when drunk. Add in 20 something testosterone and egos and it’s literally a recipe for this sort of thing happening.

The Namakagan is an awesome river to float. We take the kids down a couple times per summer. Very clean even with people drinking. You’d be hard pressed to pick up 6 cans in a 4 hour float. Have never seen the shenanigans there that you hear of on the Apple every weekend.

Nope but I’ve gotten my assed kicked a time or two and have never considered pulling a knife.

I searched for video of the incident and I can’t find it. It must not be posted yet. Obviously there were a lot of people present so getting witness accounts and sorting through the video are going to be important pieces of evidence.

There’s usually 3 sides to a story. His, hers, and the truth. For all we know, he could have seriously thought his life was in danger and really was acting in self defense. That is for the investigators, and ultimately, the jurors, to decide.

There’s a lot of other good tubing places, I think what makes the Apple River a powder keg is all the campgrounds where you have 1000s of people with access to virtually unlimited amount of intoxicants BEFORE you even get in your tube. Some AWESOME memories of my younger, wilder days but never came close to getting in any fights. Don’t remember seeing any either but I’m sure they were happening.

Would love to go back in time and do it again, but would never go back there at my current age and try to relive it. I wouldn’t be able to tolerate all the kids who are acting probably just like I did )

    Truly sucks that this happened.

OK that makes sense. I carry a knife usually for utility purposes, but couldn’t imagine having one on me when tubing in nothing but my swim suit, and I wouldn’t want it to get wet. That’s why it struck me as odd, but seems it’s maybe common. Whodathunkit?

Tubes can be quite large, many are double with a carrier/cooler section in middle. Most pack lunches to stop on a sandbar mid float and get out, stretch, plenty of sausages to cut up, sandwiches to slice, or in my case a bag of cheese curds that won’t open. Girls need swimsuits refitted at times, ropes redone, even swim trunks taken out of trees…. These aren’t short trips, good average would be around 3 to 4 hrs.

the news said he had been snorkeling, Is it common to bring snorkeling gear with to float the river?
One of the headlines I read this morning,”gun nut stabs teenager on river” apparently he had posted somewhere he supports the 2nd amendment on social media, does that make him a gun nut, and what the hell does that have to do with the stabbing? The media needs it’d ares kicked.

Floated it once, when I was 11…It was the annual father/son Boy Scout trip…Safe to say I discovered why they’re called fun bags that weekend… peace

Once a mom in the troop realized what the Apple River is about, the trip came to an end… bawling

Sucks that stuff like this happen but I am interested to see how this plays out. What if it really was self defense? Time will tell.

Why drag this obscure crap on here? There is no reliable media source to let you know what actually happened. Cell phone video and of course observer commentary, like all of the observers are going to be un-biased.

Exactly. I don’t have a knife on me when I’m in the shower, and when I’m sleeping. Otherwise I carry one everywhere. Unlimited uses.
